Monday 23rd. Finally rid of LA traffic and heading north on the Ventura Highway. The route hugs the coast for a long period and on a sunny day like this, actually makes driving a pleasure.

Slightly disappointing therefore to arrive at my coastal destination of Morro Bay which is covered in a sea fret and the temperature in the 60's. As I drive out of town to San Luis Obispo for the football, the skies are clear and it's much warmer.

Back after the game and it's still the same, damp and misty, time for a beer and a meal. The next day should be one of the best, a drive up the pacific coast highway, done it before, great scenery. Depends on the weather of course.

There's a blast from the past; I have very happy and fuzzy memories of a great bar there called Camozzi's. Sigh............

Tuesday 24th dawns with the mist lifted and Morro Bay looking splendid in the morning sunshine. The rock dominates the skyline and is in most pictures of the place.

As expected a great drive along the Pacific Coast highway, stopping off at elephant seal beach. This is a place where these huge creatures, rest, mate, play and fight, you are just yards from them safely behind a fence in a raised area. These creatures are totally unaffected by human presence and seem to be there pretty much year round. Certainly they were in the same spot as last time I passed by a few years ago.

Road works were a common feature on this trip. Several large mud slides and rockfalls mean the battle to keep the road open is constant. In fact it had a major mud slide that kept it shut for a year. I sit an one of the major slide areas for 15 minutes as one lane working with a pilot car is in operation.

Only advice for this trip is do it southbound, you are then on the coast side of the road and get better views.

My base for the night is in Ben Lomond, with a 36 mile drive each way to football. Usual heavy traffic as I reach the bay area. This will be the reality for the remainder of my stay which ends tomorrow.

Wednesday 25th, the final full day in the US of A and it starts with a drive through forest on back roads and ends in Oakland which I have to say is one of the most rundown places I have been to. A row of tents are home to some under the railway line, others gather in small groups, all homeless and in an area full of litter, very unpleasant.

I am able to check in early and start sorting my suitcase ready for the flight tomorrow. Ditching anything I don't really want so as to keep the weight down, this includes team sheets and match tickets. Have managed to resist buying much apart from the satnav and today from Walmart a belt and a small bottle of Ibuprofen.

Fuel zip code workaround - I'm going from memory so may not have remembered it correctly, but I've definitely done it before. Take the numbers from your UK postcode and add a couple of zeros. So AB12 3CD becomes 12300.

And if you're unable to download apps, it may be that your phone is using an old operating system that uses 32 bit, whereas a newly updated app may now only work with 64 bit. This affects my iPhone 5, for instance.

Thanks Mark, I did once use a zip code given to me by a guy using a ticket machine on the NY subway and that worked. Will experiment again next year.

Re: [Dave 56] 2019 USA Tour [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Thursday 26th dawns with the usual stress and worry that precedes a long flight and return of the rental car. Decent breakfast at the hotel in run down Oakland, followed by 90 minutes in traffic to get the hire car back, a journey of 31 miles. Relieved to have returned it unscathed. The car wasn't great, typically American, made a lot of noise but didn't do much!

The flight was the boring ordeal I expected, mainly my own fault, can't sleep, never seem able to watch a movie or read a book, still on a positive note they have cans of Goose Island Dry Hopped Wheat beer available, no problem downing a couple of those. Of course there is always someone worse off than you, in this case it's the poor soul who has to sit next to me for 11 hours!, doesn't bear thinking about does it.

Friday 27th and finally we land at Heathrow, 06:30 this morning and incredibly I get through immigration, collect my bags, take the Heathrow express and two tubes to catch the 08:20 to Stoke and a taxi home arriving 10:15. Probably couldn't do that again no matter how hard I tried.

Final thoughts, tough schedule, will not do that again. Unlikely to take another 11 hour flight. 18 matches in the 16 full days I was there. 3459 miles of driving. Worst thing I saw was in Las Vegas. There is a restaurant called Heart Attack, I passed it on the way to footie. Above the door is a sign saying
"over 350 pounds eats free". There was an ambulance outside with it's blue lights on as I passed, sad, sick and typical Vegas. You can view the sign if you look on Google Street view.

Best bits? the people, polite and friendly, (unless they are driving), elephant seals, pacific coast highway and from a football perspective, the positive vibe from Reno 1868, Sacramento and Fresno.

Next year, health permitting, back to June travels and a much shorter flight, probably Boston.

Over 2500 views of the thread and thanks to those who have added their contributions, hope some found it useful.

Heart Attack at the bottom of Freemont Street. It also involves a lot of group humiliation with spanking by waitresses dressed as nurses and surgeons.
Next door is Bangers Brewery, hope you called in there, excellent choice of craft beers..

Hi Bill, sounds like you are a regular there!Wink

Didn't have a chance to get to Bangers but stayed at Ellis Island Hotel Casino and Brewery. They leave you a 32oz can in your room which you take to the bar for a free beer from their range. That's 2 US pints and you can refill for 7 as often as you like.

I had the IPA which was 6.7% and very good.
