Winterton Rangers 0 Cleethorpes Town 2
Att: 90 estimated (30-35 away) Admission: comp

A comfortable win for the Owls on a delightful Summer evening in North Lincolnshire.

A goal in each half from last year's top scorer Scott Vernon was enough to see off a game challenge from the hosts. Winterton had their moments but the score was about fair overall.

Been to West Street seven (I think!) times over the years now, following both Clee & Arnold Town. It really is a hidden gem on the non-league circuit! The hospitality was, as always, superb. With 4 promotion spots this term, hopefully Rangers will return to step 5 level.

Plenty of Clee fans in attendance and the mood amongst the faithful is pretty upbeat. Barton Town on Saturday, against several ex-Clee - should be another good one.

Drove to the fixture, so back home by half 10 - with the obligatory "hay-fever" eyes!

Betfred Cup
Alloa Ath 3-3 Elgin C (pens 5-6)
Adm £18 Steak Pie £2.50 Prog £2 Att - haven't seen - looked c.500

Slightly surprised to be relieved of £18 for this (although can't complain at the entertainment) - I've paid £10 for BetFred Cup ties @ Falkirk and Livingston in the recent past.

Surprised to see that Alloa got away with charging £18 - itís been £12 at Falkirk and Queens Park (played at Airdrie) in the same competition over the past few days. I thought there was a general agreement between all the clubs that they wouldnít charge more than £12 - Iím sure I read something like that anyway

Clubs can charge whatever they agree for Betfred Cup games. If they cannot agree, then home team sets the price.

Alloa never reduce their prices for Cup ties - £18 is their Championship admission price. Their arguments is that the costs of staging the game are the same plus they have to split the gate. Last season Stirling Albion fans boycotted their game at Alloa in the League Cup because of this. Their Betfred games are probably the most expensive anywhere - a good reason for giving the wid tinks a bodyswerve.

Knutsford 0 Congleton Town 1, PSF, Att: 60, Admission: £2, Prog: No

The first of two pre-season games this week which were conveniently on the direct route home from work. As ever, Knutsford's Manchester Road ground looked a picture in the sunshine, immaculate playing surface and smart little clubhouse as well as the low covered standing area stretching for about 20 yards along one side. The game was played at a decent pace, a strong-looking Congleton side scoring the only goal of the game on the hour mark, with just the right amount of competitiveness.

Clydebank 0-0 St Rochs...PSF...Adm £4..Prog £2 covering all 5 pre season games.

A very competitive friendly with a number of booking thrown in for good measure. Clydebank came closest to scoring on 83 minutes when the ball hit the cross bar and back into play.
Yokers ground has gone plastic this season with floodlights installed for the new season. The ground is now 50/50 shared between Yoker and the Bankies. The battered old barrell roofed Stand has been taken down though I'm told there are plans to put up a new covered section before Christmas. The old Stand is piled up and cordoned off with Heras fencing, maybe they will use some of the former metalwork in the new construction.

Both dugouts are now on the Farmfoods side of the ground opposite the old Stand. The Club souvenir shop has been moved but no sign of the old refreshment portacabin unless it's moved upstairs into the Clubhouse. They've opted for a grey coating of paint everywhere, I wonder if they got the paint from the BAE Shipbuilding yard nearby...not many grey ships getting built there at the moment.

A good turn out, St Rochs always have a decent support on their travels and Clydebank fans settling in with a permanent home at last.

A fair result on the evening, it's all about getting fit after all....and the weather stayed fine....who needs a roof!!

A final mention to Barry the Cat a local spray paint artist, who has painted a couple of superb murals by the turnstile as well as both the Clubs crests. Top stuff, hopefully the graffiti artists leave it be.

Tuesday 16 July 2019
Scottish League Cup
Greenock Morton 6 Dumbarton 1
Admission £12
Programme £1 ( poor foldout affair middle just a fixture chart)
Badge £5
Coffee £1

Another long trip from home to get another required ground in.

This is a proper old school ground with 2 big stands and terracing at both ends. one end was out of use though. Wanted to go on the terrace but was given a seat in the stand. Think the ticket office woman was flustered big queues. Why dont they just let you pay on the turnstiles.

There was a lot of neat passing around until a Dumbarton defender put into his own net. Then the floodgates opened and by halftime Greenock Morton were 5 nil up.

As expected the second half petered and both teams managed a goal each .

A very enjoyable evening on a pleasant night.

PSF

York Rd

Maidenhead Utd 1-0 Kuwaiti National XI

Directions: A329(M) M4 jn 8/9 - A308 (M) N - parked in Stafferton Way (£1.80 after 18:00)

- left home very early (18:20 ish) compared to usual for this venue but scuppered by appalling traffic heading E out of RG.

Still only arrived 20' before KO - just time to join a long queue in Stripes for a swift half of Rebellion

Adm: 10 Progs: yes but very limited supply ran out quickly - suspect the dreaded paper grabbers were allowed to by multiples - Free teamsheets provided

Att: didn't do h/c but seated stand was fairly well populated as was the Bell St end and the elevated section up above the main entrance/Stripes bar.
- found a spare 'hospitality' seat. Would guesstimate high three figures 700-800 ish - possibly more?

Match
1-0 29' new signing (that AM) Whitehall pen

Ht

Lots of changes 2nd half visitors used their full squad - 'Magpies' used all of their subs too incl. in total. 7 Triallists.

Quite a decent standard: 156th FIFA ranking were lively and talented individually but hosts workrate and organisation adeptly kept them out. Fashioned a few threats of their own but patterns of play were broken up by streams of substitutions.
Winning goal: mazy run by Josh Kelly ended by a daft trip.

Bit of a 'mare on return journey: A308(M) closed and westbound access to M4 from A404(M) shut - signage could be better here - trundled back along A4 home - roadworks at Knowle HIll not helping - indoors around 22:20

Gornal Athletic 3 Coven Athletic 1 (PSF) Att: 29

The lower ranked visitors were much the better side before the break, but the Peacocks got their act together and ended up comfortable winners in an enjoyable encounter, delayed by a no show from the referee. His replacement did a splendid job.

Game played at Hilton Hall Community Centre in Lanesfield, which proved to be surprisingly pleasant, but had no football furniture. A grass bank behind one goal offered a fine view. Good company from Fatboyfat and Mr Smallman, who graced this pitch some forty years ago, and provided some good local history to keep us entertained whilst we were waiting for the game to start.

Sandbach United 1-2 Northwich Victoria (1-0 HT) at Sandbach Football Community Centre
Friendly
Admission: £3, Programme: None, Tea: £1.10
Attendance: 127 (h/c)

Dad was out drinking in Nantwich with some workmates and I was planning to head up to see him after work, so a quick plan was made for me to pick him up and take him back up to Salford. This game was on the way and Dad hadn't been here so seemed like a good idea. Sandbach took the lead around a quarter of an hour in through a decently worked goal which was put in from inside the box by Aaron Knight. Northwich seemed to have more of the possession in the first half but it was the hosts who looked more like they would get a goal. The second half was only five minutes old when a Sandbach player went down with what looked like a fairly serious injury, fortunately he was able to hobble off but he was down for a good few minutes. Northwich were better in the second half and had a couple of decent chances to equalise, in particular forcing a diving save out of the home keeper with 20ish minutes left to go. The visitors did manage an equaliser 10 minutes later, a similar goal to Sandbach's, and snatched a late winner with a header from inside the box to the delight of the decent travelling support. No changes to the ground since my previous visit, two wooden sheds and a kit stand at one end with the rest flat hard standing.

Grounds visited: 288
Last new ground: Townfield Lane (Barnton)
Next planned fixture: Unsure
