Appreciate the obits column is for footballers, and to my knowledge Jack never was a muddied oaf, but just posting to mark the passing of one of the last of the 'old school' northern county cricket skippers.
Jack Bond : Lancs CC (and Notts and Lancs Leagues)
He took the bunch of allegedly self-centred ego maniacs that were Lancs in the mid 60s and turned them into THE limited overs team.
Jack Simmons and David Hughes
Clive Lloyd and Farokh Engineer
Lever and Shuttleworth opening the bowling
Harry Pilling only half the size of Clive Lloyd
The Gilette Cup and John Player team.
The catch to dismiss Asif Iqbal
Winning the semi final at 10 to 9 one night by belting the runs off Mike Proctor as the moon rose over the Old Trafford scoreboard
Eeee lad.... them were t'days!
Not meaning to get over romantic about this but Bond was perhaps the last of the 'can't bat very well, can't bowl much either but I know damn well how to skipper a team' first class cricketers and so his passing is the passing of an era (unless you can describe Brearley in the same way)
