How come she didn't know?

Many Americans I've met know the whole world knows all about it and celebrates their independence day, on July the Fourth, by putting out American flags and a big party.

Yes amazing. One of mine texted to say enjoy the fireworks, they finally stopped at about 01-00.

Shan't bore you with their academic achievements.

Bad thing though was that the pubs closed early some at 17-00 (IF open) , managed to stay till closing (21-30) at Church Brew Works pub until mates picked me up after the game at Riverhounds.

A few years back we were in Key West on 4 July, and we watched the fireworks from our hotel’s rooftop bar.

While there, some youngish Americans asked us where we were from. When we told them we were from the UK they replied:

“Oh wow, and when is your independence day?”

I was tempted to reply that it was the day we got rid of the US, but thought better of it.

My wife describes 04 July as independence day, but only because our eldest kids were both born on that day and she no longer had to carry them around inside her.

I wouldn't be too hard on her Paul, it's amazing how patchy is general knowledge/teachng of even recent major historical events, even amongst so-called experts.

A couple of months ago "BBC History" magazine brought together four historians, specialising in modern British history, to discuss Margaret Thatcher's Premiership. Reading through their analysis I was amazed to find that none of the four made any mention of North Sea Oil Revenues which raised £166 billion in taxes between 1981 and 1990.

This windfall was an enormous boost to the Thatcher Government finances but apparently not worth commenting on by historians of the period.
