Scottish Championship Changes Can't Post or Reply Privately

Proposals under consideration for an expansion of the championship to 12 clubs. Still 4 games each.

No relegation next season and 2 Promoted.

Below that considerations are:
- merge L1 & L2 with 18 teams
- keep L1 & L2 and add 2 new teams from HL and LL
- keep L1 & L2 and add 2 colt teams

Here we go. No need to guess which two colt teams those would be...

bringing colts team in would be a farce unfair on those teams trying to get into league through pyramid system

Re: [alderman friend] Scottish Championship Changes [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Thought the BBC Sport website was being very poor this morning in overlooking the Colts aspect of this.

I suppose if the two extra clubs were to be from the HL and LL it might finally get rid of the Cove/East Kilbride bottleneck in the play-offs, but when - not if - Cove do come up no-one else is every likely to come up from the HL, whereas Kelty, Bonnyrigg, Linlithgow and the rest would be forming a less-than-orderly queue in the south once the LL actually contains 16 proper clubs.

More importantly, I can't imagine the Championship would ever have a 44-game season - it'd surely follow the example of the Premiership split and a 38-match programme. Otherwise you'd be looking at an absolute minimum 44 league games plus four in the League Cup (as it stands) and one each in the Scottish Cup and Challenge Cup. Never going to happen. And that's without some teams having a further two, four or possibly six play-off games...

The old First Division was 44 games in the early 90s for a spell very long and drawn out.

Any of the above maybe proposed at the SPFL AGM but the Colts idea has been rebuffed numerous times.

I've thought for a while that the Scottish Premier (and possibly the Championship below) could best expand to 14 teams each, with a split in 7/7 later on.
This would give a standard 26 game season each team playing each other H & A, then divide into 2 sevens (instead of current 2 sixes), and play a further 12 games H & A.
Total 38 game season (as per now so no effect on calendar). But DOES remove the inherent inequality between home and away fixtures in the 5 extra matches now after the divide (as well as the three rounds prior to that).
Then whatever numbers work for one or two divisions below that (but ideally adding a few more clubs from HL/LL with more from LL).

The number of matches works, but the problem is having odd number of teams in each group would mean teams having to sit out two rounds of matches each. Plus one team would be sitting out the last round of potentially championship deciding matches, which is something I thought they tried to avoid these days.

Yes, I reckon a 6/8 split is more likely that 7/7.
More likely is something like the Danish system with playoff groups below the championship group and all sorts of unnecessary extras. Might be worth it to increase the variety of teams though.

"A variety of teams" is so needed now. If, as you would expect, Inverness CT get past Ayr in the play-offs, they will then take on Dundee United, meaning that the sides will have met each other just the seven times this season. Madness.

The Championship proposal is to mirror the Premiership structure. Teams play each other 3 times, then split into two leagues of 6. Total of 38 games.

Looks like the L1 & L2 clubs are after a good payday when Celtic and Rangers U21s come to play.

12/12/18 is certainly an improvement on what we have now.

There is no credible argument for two divisions of 10 at L1/L2 level.

Yes I read that hence why I asked to see how certain it is they could have proposals t only have veltic and rangers in the leagues and play each other 22 times a season that doesn't mean its going to happen. Hence why I asked

Re: [knmeynell] Scottish Championship Changes [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Yes one team in each half would sit out each round of fixtures with a 7/7 split.
But you could ensure that it is the teams placed 7th & 8th at time of split (and therefore furthest away from either the title or relegation) that sit out the final round of fixtures (and the 7th round too).
Oh and this would add two more fixture dates to the calendar (I had said no impact on calendar, sorry).
So teams 1 and 14 miss rounds 1 and 8, teams 2 and 13 miss rounds 2 and 9, teams 3 and 12 miss round 3 and 10 etc, up to teams 7 and 8 miss round 7 and 14.
