It looks as though rugby union's attempt to establish a top quality club in Yorkshire is over. Second tier Yorkshire Carnegie, formed originally as Leeds Tykes, after a merger of the Headingley and Roundhay clubs, share Headingley with Super League's Leeds Rhinos RLFC. Carnegie bosses hosted a meeting with supporters before the season's last game (a 22-21 home win over Hartpury, watched by just 960). Fans were told there is no longer any money. Next season, Carnegie will go part-time and their academy will be cut back to a much more localized affair. Eight of this season's first team squad, along with director of rugby Chris Stirling, have confirmed they are leaving. Others, notably the overseas contingent, are likely to follow them out of the door.

This takes place against a background of belt-tightening (and job-shedding) at the RFU. The RFU has sent a letter to member clubs stating from next season the counties will get less money, investment in facilities will shrink (the laying of new synthetic pitches is to be suspended), cuts will be made to travel funding (key, one would imagine, to propping up English RU's otherwise geographically unsustainable pyramid), match officials will reduce in number and Twickenham will host fewer community game finals.

Re: [Feversham Lens] Yorkshire Carnegie RUFC [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Looks as though Yorkshire Carnegie are on the brink of folding...

A statement from chief executive Gary Hetherington: The Leeds RUFC board, of which Sir Ian McGeechan, Prof Paul Smith and myself are responsible for the running of Yorkshire Carnegie and for making decisions on the club's future, is awaiting a decision from the shareholders of Yorkshire Tykes RUFC, who provide funds to enable LRUFC to operate, before a further announcement can be made. But it is fair to say the club is in a critical position, having lost its major source of funding, and the board is now working closely with the RFU and YTRUFC shareholders to manage our current predicament and, hopefully, plot a way forward.

Statement issued today (12/6) by Yorkshire Carnegie, who appear keen to battle on:

Leeds RUFC Ltd, trading as Yorkshire Carnegie, have today proposed a Company Voluntary Agreement with its creditors and Begbies Traynor in Leeds have been appointed to act as joint nominees and supervisors. Directors of Leeds RUFC and its holding company Yorkshire Tykes Limited, whose consortium of investors have supported the clubs since 2014, have worked hard to replace the significant loss of funding support but no new investors have been found. The proposed CVA will be achieved following a lump sum contribution from Yorkshire Tykes Ltd which will enable a dividend to be paid to unsecured creditors. A new operational, break even plan for the 2019-20 season has been presented to the RFU with the Yorkshire Carnegie club continuing to stage matches at Emerald Headingley Stadium and the team operating from the Leeds Rugby facilities at Kirkstall. The Board hope creditors will continue to support the club and approve the CVA to ensure Yorkshire Carnegie continue to operate in the Championship in 2019-20 and beyond.
