1885/86 English (FA) Cup - Hartford St. John's / Newtown Can't Post or Reply Privately

According to the FCHD and the Football Association's archive of results for the cup, there was only match played for this first round tie. However, The Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News of 31Oct85 (p2) and The Wrexham Advertiser of 24Oct85 (p3) and others appear to show that there were two. A 0-0 draw at Hartford on the 17th of October, followed by a 3-1 win to Newtown, at Newtown on 24Oct85.

Can anyone shed any light please? Happy to be corrected.

Thanks, Jeff

Press reports definitely back you up. Sporting Life [dated 23 Oct 1885] noted that the first game was a tie [0-0 as reported by the Wrexham Examiner, 24 Oct 1885] and the replay would be played-off on 24 October 1885. As you stated, the score WAS 3-1 and the match is reported in several newspapers of the time.
