It is alleged Toronto and Toulouse declined to take part in the 2019 Challenge Cup because the RFL asked for a sizeable, upfront indemnity fee. The suggestion is the money would help offset lower gate receipts if a club (such as Toronto or Toulouse) from outside the sport's heartlands reached the Wembley final (as happened in 2018, with Catalans Dragons).

Rugby League World magazine editor Matthew Shaw tweeted: "Toronto haven't entered the Challenge Cup because they were asked to pay a significant sum to the RFL on the basis they reached the Final. This year's attendance saw the RFL lose a big sum of money and they had to cover their backs in case a non-UK side reached the final. Toulouse also asked to pay the same figure and, I believe, Catalans were too. As a result, Toronto aren't entering as they were left shocked by the figures involved."

Attendances at the last 4 finals have been going down

2015 - Leeds v Hull KR 80140
2016 - Hull v Warrington 76235
2017 - Hull v Wigan 68525
2018 - Catalan v Warrington 50672

Since Wembley was reopened the trend has been downwards with only 3 increase attendances from the previous year in the 12 finals played at the new Wembley.

Ties to be played over the weekend of January 26-27

Pleased with that draw, from a personal hopping standpoint. Ticks on offer at Bentley, Orrell St James and Wallsend Eagles, along with - albeit further afield - London Chargers and North Herts Crusaders. Likely to be a toss-up between Bentley and Wallsend.

As always venues are being kept secret, still no news from London Chargers but recently they have used Skolars ground or Old Blues.

Apart from Millom there is only one Sunday game so far, North Herts v RAF at either 12 or 1pm. Club twitter suggests the latter

Venue is Hitchin RU which is little more than a park. It does not comply with competition rules unless they have been relaxed, but not does Bentley and others I have seen in the past.

There is meant to be a rail, a means of taking a gate and a prog as a minimum but the latter is also not enforced

And now holders Catalans are set to join Toronto and Toulouse in boycotting the competition after a cash demand of 500k was made on them. Non-member clubs they may be but it sounds very unfair is not the fault of these clubs that the RFL made a loss last season. No mention of Red Star being asked to pay a similar amount!!

Orrell is a decent ground, fully railed, adequate parking modern, basic, but homely clubhouse

They will play at home. I am at work at the moment but can provide an address if you need. Ground is adjacent to M6 but on Wigan not Orrell side

Ground up to NCL requirements and I suspect they will be members sooner than later

Red Star are an amateur club and are exempt from this regulation, not that would be in a position to pay 500k anyway.

If the RFL can't afford to use Wembley, because only 50,000 attended then final, then maybe they should look at using a smaller, cheaper stadium in the RL heartland.

I was at Wembley in 2017 for the Wigan v Hull FC final and that too was very poorly attended. As for moving the showpiece final away from London, it's been discussed elsewhere and a majority would be against such a move.

This game will probably be streamed live, possibly on proper telly, in Serbia or at least in Belgrade, so this is a good choice by the BBC

I had a PM from a fellow poster about the Millom-Red Star tie. I rang Millom, who confirmed it will be all pay on the day (three quid entry, 50p programme). Any further queries, the chap at Millom to contact is Paul Roskell (07761 613601). His number is on the club's Facebook page

For anyone interested Bentley are indicating they are looking to produce a programme
It is compulsory in theory but not in reality
With nothing new, looking at this or Orrell at the moment
Ground is just a field on an estate with longish walk from changing rooms
