David McNamara Can't Post or Reply Privately

David McNamara refereed the WSL game between Manchester City and Reading but forgot to bring a coin with him, so he decided the kick off with a round of rock, paper, scissors. David has now been suspended for 3 weeks by the FA.

Absolutely obsurd! He forgot to bring one out and Apparently should have gone back into dressing room to get a coin.

Don't think there is any law that states kick off has to be decided by toss of coin is there?

There is actually. Law 8: the team that wins the toss of a coin decides which goal it will attack in the first half

There is no mention of whose responsibility it is to ensure that a coin is available, who tosses it or who calls.

None of which alters the fact that suspending Mr McNamara for finding an equitable solution to a minor problem which averted an unnecessary delay to the kick off is an utterly absurd decision.

Fair enough. Too lazy to look it up and assumed there wasn't a necessary law.

He could have just walked to the side of the pitch, borrowed a coin from someone, either on either teams coaching staff, or someone in the stand.

Referees at some grassroots football matches are planning to use rock, paper, scissors at kick-off to show support for McNamara

I read that this method of deciding the kick off was going to be use in some WSL games in support of David McNamara. All this will achieve is to make a mockery of the game. A protest letter (or tweets/retweets) by 1000's officials, players and supporters would probably have been better..

I would rather see referees go on strike over this. To suspend a ref for something that has no consequence on the game is farcical - to give him the same ban as a player gets for abusing a referee is nothing short of disgraceful.
Just shows how useless the FA are in this country.

Refs cannot be seen to ignore basic laws of the game willy-nilly. They have to nip this in the bud now, otherwise who knows what the next 50/50 game will be?

I think that the toss should be made in the tunnel/ref's room when teamsheets are handed in.

He has not ignored it he made an error that had no consequence on the game. It is irrelevant whether it is coin toss, Rock Paper Scissors, Which hand is the whistle in, or aces high, this is excessive punishment. It is a case of the FA bullying someone who wonít answer back. Letís see what happens next time a team forget to bring their right kit with them, will anyone get a 3 game ban then?

See my post #5 on this. The FA had to be seen to punish the official for his actions. Was the ban too excessive, in my opinion, yes it was. A one match ban and maybe have him monitored for a few games or a referee refresher course,

An error easily rectified by asking somebody, anyybody, for a coin.

It is relevant, just as relevant as any other law of the game! Trivial, but a necessity.

I'm one for having the toss sorted before the players get on the pitch. Then go to the end your defending and get on with the game.

Yes in lower non-leagues but higher up the pyramid it is about the sponsors being shown in front of the tv cameras.

Do they not get enough coverage around the ground in 90 minutes?
