I have just finished watching Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old" and am staggered by the processes which have created amazing colourised film of World War I.

The reality and futility of WWI is magnified by watching film which could have been made yesterday.

You have till Sunday, I believe, to watch on i-player.

I have had an obsession with the first world war for at least 55 years. I would guess that I have seen all the film shown in this programme before, probably several times in some cases, and yet I hardly recognised any of it such was the transformation made by the people behind the movie.

It's not to everyone's taste I guess but I would highly recommend watching it.

It has had glowing reviews and I'd fully go along with them. I strongly recommend watching it.

Over the decades views as to the necessity/inevitability or otherwise of Britain's involvement have varied. The documentary raised a lot of interesting points. The contributions from veterans of the conflict were particularly fascinating. We see them as victims, but that didn't seem to be how they saw themselves, either at the time or subsequently.

One amusing story from a Tommy was of the time a Prussian regiment was scheduled to replace a unit from elsewhere in Germany in the front line. The unit being taken out of the line for r&r informed the Brits that the Prussians were on their way and told them "give them hell!"
