National Conference League ARL 2019 Can't Post or Reply Privately

It looks as though the NCL is facing its biggest turnover of clubs for several years, which sounds like good news for rugby league hoppers. Ten clubs have expressed an interest in joining the amateur game's flagship competition while up to five existing members could drop out, one of them owing to financial problems. Depending who you believe, Distington (Cumberland League), Hensingham (Cumberland League) and former NCL members Walney Island (North West League) are among the applicants. There's also talk of former NCL founder members Heworth (Yorkshire League) applying to rejoin. The York club boast some of the best facilities in amateur rugby league. League chairman Trevor Hunt is having discussions with the existing members who are struggling to continue at this level.

Quite like to know myself, Jim!

I'll be surprised if Salford City Roosters (Eccles, as was) continue in the NCL next year. They had problems raising a matchday fifteen several times last season. Waterhead, too, have been struggling for a while. Perhaps something to do with rugby league's declining profile in Oldham.

It's been suggested (by somebody with a good source) there have been eight applicants for NCL 2019: Batley Boys, East Hull, Gloucester, Hensingham, Heworth, Nottingham Outlaws, Queensbury and Walney Central. East Hull, Heworth and Walney Central are former members. Gloucester, I presume, are Lionel Hurst's ex-All Golds. It's been reported Distington did apply but were turned down.

It appears Salford City Roosters will be good to continue in 2019. They have a new coach in place and he is busy recruiting players. Heard it suggested two clubs pondering quitting the NCL are from divisions higher than Division Three. Interesting.

Looks as though Ince Rose Bridge, who finished third-bottom of Division One last season, are one of the clubs looking to quit the NCL.

News from Nottingham Outlaws: they were one of six clubs - nine applied, originally - whose application to join the 2019 NCL was forwarded to the competition's management committee. Three clubs will be selected (via a vote of existing members) from those six, giving a total membership of 50 (56 is the NCL maximum). Outlaws say their application was rejected, on the grounds their junior teams do not play in an organised league structure. They will continue in the Premier Division of the Yorkshire League.

Well, we got there in the end!

The three clubs hoping to be voted in are Batley Boys, Hensingham and Heworth. Each require 24 votes at Monday's meeting of existing member clubs.

The six clubs whose applications were rejected are Cutsyke, Distington, East Hull, Gloucestershire All Golds, Nottingham Outlaws and Walney Central.

Looks like Batley Boys have told the NCL they've arranged to play home games at Mount Pleasant, Batley RLFC. Mount Pleasant is very close to Batley Boys' clubhouse, unlike the club's usual pitch, which is alongside the A638 in Staincliffe, and a walk of five to 10 minutes. If true, that's disappointing (at least for groundhoppers).

Batley Boys, Hensingham and Heworth have been voted in for 2019.

A Batley Boys tweet refers to an "incredible day".

Hensingham tweet: "Delighted to announce we have been accepted into the NCL, fully aware this is a massive challenge, but as a club we feel that this is the right time to move forward, big thanks to everyone who has been involved in the application."

To wrap up the close-season comings and goings:

Waterhead Warriors and Salford City Roosters, the bottom two in 2018's Division Three, have been re-elected by member clubs.

It has been confirmed Batley Boys will play their NCL home games at Mount Pleasant (Batley Bulldogs RLFC).

The 2019 season's Third Division fixtures begin on February 23. Premier, First and Second Division games start on March 2.

A statement on the NCL website reads: The rationale for 14 teams in the Third Division is that experience has informed us that not all clubs in Division Three are able to complete the season for whatever reason. No club has started the campaign with that intention, but when the losses start to pile on, some clubs find it difficult to retain their players and they struggle to fulfil their fixtures.

When we had 12 teams in the competition, a couple of clubs falling by the wayside led to insufficient fixtures. However, since we have gone to 14 clubs, we have still lost a couple of clubs, but it has still meant we have been able to provide sufficient games, usually around 22, to make the competition fully viable.

Hopefully this season we don't lose anyone and the clubs enjoy their full 26 league games, and to accommodate this we need to start the campaign just one week earlier than the rest of the competition.

The March 2 start for the other three divisions will enable those clubs who are still in the Challenge Cup to at least have a league game that prepares them for their third round ties a week later, potentially against League 1 opposition.

It's being reported Salford City Roosters (formerly Eccles) have quit the National Conference League. If true, no big surprise. They've been struggling for several seasons now. SCR, bottom of Division Three, with three wins and a draw from 17 games, pulled out of last Saturday's (July 20) fixture at Heworth.

Confusingly, results have been recorded for Roosters' last 3 games despite not being played. The matches at Heworth on 20th and Hunslet Warriors on 27th July both awarded 46-12 to the home team while Woolston Rovers were awarded a 25-18 away win on 3rd August. Only found from Woolston's twitter feed that was the result awarded and the game wasn't played. What happened to 24-0 as the default scoreCrazy?
Guess it is a safe bet that Roosters' two Friday night home games on 30th August and 6th September still in the fixture list on the league website won't be played.

A very safe bet as all following their resignation all unplayed matches were awarded to their opponents with the scores as shown above. The league table shows that all their fixtures are finished.

Conference rules state that if a club resigns having completed 60% or more of their fixtures, their remaining games are awarded to their opponents by the average score so far recorded, rather than deleting their records. This is were the 25-18 for Salford's home games and 46-12 for their away fixtures comes from. A similar scenario happened last season when Stanley Rangers resigned, but I have no idea what they will do in the presumably less likely occurrence of a club resigning with a predominantly winning record.

It seems the software on the RFL website can only cope with this by adding the result after the scheduled date for each of their remaining games. However, as Loiner has already indicated, the league tables published weekly in each of the specialist rugby league newspapers, have added all the remaining results in and show Salford's fixtures as already complete.

Relegation from the Premier could come down to a rearranged match next week. Bottom side Kells already down but could be joined by any two from three:

Rochdale Mayfield 20-11 (-175)
Leigh Miners Rangers 21-11 (-325)
Thornhill Trojans 20-8 (-197)
Final Fixtures:
07/9 Leigh Miners Rangers v Thornhill trojans
07/9 Rochdale Mayfield v Hunslet Club Parkside
14/9 Rochdale Mayfield v Thornhill Trojans

Mayfield's opponents this week, Hunslet Club Parkside, one of four teams vying to finish in top spot going into the Play-Off's:
West Hull 33 pts (+226) away to Siddal
Wath Brow Hornets 32 pts (+314) home to Kells
Hunslet Club Parkside 32 pts (+154) away to Rochdale Mayfield
Thatto Heath Crusaders 31 pts (+272) away to Underbank Rangers

Underbank Rangers (5th 24 pts +99) and Siddal (6th 24 pts +78) need to avoid defeat in their final games, both against teams fighting for top spot, to clinch the two remaining Play-Off spots and hold off Egremont Rangers (7th 22 pts +66) whose final game is away to Lock Lane.
