Suffragettes Can't Post or Reply Privately

Did anyone else watch this last night on BBC1, or were you all watching Love Island?

I'm not a great fan of Lucy Worsley's need to dress up but this was an outstanding programme - drama, documentary, history, call it what you will.

These women in the WSPU were amazing - it was basically a terrorist cell and they went through all sorts of privations, imprisonment, forced feeding, sexual assault for their cause. Meanwhile the Establishment did what the Establishment always does when threatened. Close ranks, get the the tame press onside, churn out the propaganda and send for the Special Branch.

The male writing of history has always made the Suffragettes appear a slightly batty mob, but my god, watch this programme and realise what a battle they put up simply for the right to vote. I settled down to watch prepared to scoff, but watched it filled with admiration.

If you missed it, I-player is your friend.
