In 1066 what was the ball, a bladder, or perhaps some poor person;s head. At least if it was the latter there would be easy replacements if the original head was lost. I can think of a few people on here whose heads I might consider donating, starting with ....

What about games between lost cities. The first match could be Pompeii v Santorini(before the island blew itself to pieces)

The local derby between Pompeii and Herculaneum always caused an eruption.

Perhaps there should be an Italian Volcanos League - certainly plenty of other contenders besides Pompeii and Herculaneum including Etna, Lipari, Stromboli and Volcano, and my favourite ground at Taormina could be used.

I presume the result of the 1066 Anglo-French encounter, the so called "Battle of Hastings", could have been found somewhere in the Bayeux Tapestry.

You'd have had to wait 400 years to read about it in the programme. Printer problems apparently..

It appears that English captain Harold was injured following an altercation over a controversial referring decision

The 900th anniversary of this would have been in 1966

Hmmm

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I reckon most football teams in the medieval era would have been sponsored by rich land owners or noblemen and they would have played against each other in tournaments as, due to undeveloped infrastructure, it would not have been practical to have leagues. I suspect there would have been plenty of challenge matches, too, and it would have been left to scribes to compile merit tables ranking the different teams.

Wasn't the Colosseum a Roman football stadium used by local side Roma?

Yes, but the changing rooms were too far from the arena so they didn't make the grading.

OK ~ good funnies.

THIS is what I'm thinking about...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/...nent-know-today.html

Can a year be picked and then a modern season's club distributions be transplanted into that scenario, including towns'/cities' appropriate exonyms and then list the participants in the new leagues thus formed and have a go at guessing how each league would finish?

Let's try it like a collaborative game, seeing as we have a basic lively interest!

First... Which historical year shall we choose within which to emplace (I suggest) last season's teams? Which year has a/the most exciting different national borders?

Let's try this out!

Pre industrial area most people in England lived in rural areas. There were exceptions, London and towns along the Great north Road trading route and south coast ports, so picking an era before the 19th century might more of a challenge. On the understanding that travel isn't an issue, 3 days for York to travel to an away fixture in London, then maybe a league formed around the reign of Elizabeth I. By that time the country had a reasonable population of around 3 million to choose from for teams and fans base.

Remember that for this first exercise we'll be using the clubs existing in the 2016-17 season, superimposing them on a map of (say) mid 17th. Century ~ or whatever other year might look 'tasty'.

The 'fun' derives from the revelation of teams' combinations in unfamiliar groups and then deciding on their would-be finishing orders.

Surely if you are picking a date, say 1400, then you should be looking at the major cities of that time.

Nope.

We were still backward peasants in those days unlike our metropolitan European neighbours.

Soon to be the same situation again.

Did we get back in before we got kicked out when the monasteries were given their dissolution?

I fancy that one or more of the Bristol clubs made end of season tours to Spain and Portugal in the early 1600s to sample the ports and sherries, and another made a trip to the Americas in 1497, but were lost in the Atlantic on a second journey there some years later.

That'd be a different game altogether and would be much limited because of the lack of comparative team strength data no longer being imported from the modern leagues.

Didn’t the plague have a disasterous effect on the clubs & national teams in this era?
