The MLS has announced opening fixtures for the 2018 season.
The season will commence on 3 March, with 11 games that weekend. As there are now 23 teams, New York Red Bull will not play

The new Franchise, LAFC will not play at home until the end of April when their stadium is due for completion
Portland Timbers start home games in mid-April due to refurbishment
DC United will play at as yet unnamed stadium, or stadium until the new ground is completed in the summer

Full fixtures will be released in January

Meanwhile, the news appears to be that there is a bid to move the Columbus Crew franchise to Austin, Texas.
Although the San Jose franchise was moved to Houston, the Columbus move is the first real move of this type. When San Jose moved, it was because of stadium issues and in lieu of a new franchise. San Jose were then returned to the League with an expansion slot soon afterwards

Nashville has been awarded the 24th Franchise, but it is not clear when they will start

Shocking news about the club with the first specific soccer stadium in the MLS.

2nd in USA.

Visited with our 'Tussen' leader Leo in 1999 , capacity of Crew Stadium in them days was 22,555 and 19,356 were in attendance on July 24 v Dallas.

It seems a knife in the back from the MLS.

A section of an article by Ryan Huettel , link to full article follows-

''Columbus was one of the first cities to embrace this conviction, taking what was first a fairly vague idea about what American soccer could be and turning it into a meaningful community in the Crew. Now, with Wahl’s report, any semblance of respect for Columbus’ contribution to the American game has been destroyed in the league’s search for marginally higher returns.
Every current and prospective MLS club needs to take the warning from Precourt and Garber. Once you push past the flashy marketing and high-minded rhetoric, MLS doesn’t care about its individual teams. Clubs like Columbus aren’t seen as institutions with legitimate roots in their city – they’re merely the Olivias that Orsino uses to promote the true goal: its brand.
Recently, Nashville approved a taxpayer-funded $275 million stadium project, putting the city in a good position to secure one of the two mid-December expansion slots. There was absolutely no semblance of irony that as one mid-sized capital was pushed out of the fray, another excitedly joined in. This callous disregard of Columbus is not only wrong, it’s potentially dangerous for the development of soccer in the country, especially when MLS has a not-so-distant history of endangering clubs on the whim of the market. ''

Meanwhile, the NASL will not run this year after a dispute with the USSF

http://www.nasl.com/...ation-of-2018-season

Some background, the USSF denied the NASL its Division II status due to its falling numbers which meant it no longer met the requirements
As the same time, the USL which has been expanding year on year was moved up from Division III to Division II

Note, these divisions are for two reasons, prestige and when the clubs enter the US Open Cup - there is no promotion at any level.

There is no Division III status league this season, while the PDL is Division IV, and I think the NPSL may be as well.
After the initial denial of status, the NASL had decided to adopt the European season and start in the autumn, but they seem to have dropped this.

It is not as bad as that, but comes down to football in America following American sport patterns
Hence there are a dozen completely independent clubs in the USL
A further dozen are affiliates, these are operated independently, but have a strong link in players and coaching.
The remaining nine are listed by wiki as partnerships. Six of these are actual reserve teams
I am therefore intrigued about the difference between the status of the other three, Swope Park Rangers, Bethlehem Steel and Real Monarchs and the affiliates.
I hope to be at some of these this summer.

MLS has an impressive record with regard to relocation. Baseball is the best of the 'Big 4' with a move roughly once a decade from 1901 to present, but that includes the 1950s and 1960s when everyone went mad, and it's about once every 20 years aside.

MLS hasn't had a single relocation yet, and hopefully it is a sign of sporting practice in America in general, and especially in soccer, that moving teams is a big negative. Soccer has had it's own impact on US sport, drawing 'European' (or 'Rest-of-the-World) ideas into the US sports scene, with naming conventions, not to mention discussion about things like promotion and relegation.

Hopefully the Columbus franchise will stay put. The club has certainly earned its place in MLS folklore. It would be a shame for it to close.

the San Jose franchise was put on hiatus and its olayers and coaching staff transferred to the Houston expansion franchise. I appreciate it may be effectively the same thing but officially there have been no relocations.

Either way, it has very good record compared to other sports leagues. I my impression is that it as one of the most fundamental lessons learned from the failure of the NASL so I hope they aren't getting complacent about it.

One difference I can see is that the affiliates can play in the Open Cup, while the partnerships cannot.

The USL has started announcing franchises for USL D3, which is to start in 2019.

LA Galaxy and newbies LAFC will meet for the first time on March 31, in what has been dubbed "El Tráfico". I've never been to Los Angeles but I think they must have a bit of a traffic issue. Ibrahimovic is expected to make is debut for LA Galaxy in this game. The game is live on Sky Sports.

It'll take something to top some of the matches in the "California Clasico", San Jose v the Galaxy. The 2013 clash at Stanford was an absolute belter as the Earthquakes came back from 2-0 down - and 2-1 down after 91 minutes - to win it 3-2. With ten men. Still get goosebumps watching the ten minute highlights https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6hlOW_eaZDo

I'm pleased to see such comparisons are taking place. I lived in the USA 1983-1986 and for (what seemed like) a long time afterwards the idea of 'soccer' being discussed in any way beyond a kid's game was unimaginable.

I just wish I had a team to support. RBNY would be the obvious choice for where I lived in upstate NY, but I can't support RB. And I also cannot bring myself to support 'Citeh', being an Arsenal fan.

Oh well. I enjoy watching developments.

Re: [cope1] MLS 2018 [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

The newest team in MLS, Los Angeles FC, have had a hot and cold start to its inaugural season. LAFC are two-thirds of the way through its 6-game road trip to start the 2018 campaign.

Things looked good for the black and gold after impressive 1-0 and 5-1 wins over Seattle and Real Salt Lake. Things were certainly on the up-tick when they bolted to a 3-0 lead over the LA Galaxy in the first 60 minutes of their first-ever derby clash. Since then, the roof has caved in on LAFC. They have surrendered 9 goals in the last 120 minutes of play; four coming in the last 30 minutes against the Galaxy, with the indomitable Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring the tying and winning goals for the Galaxy, then 5 Saturday in Atlanta.

LAFC's next road trips are in Vancouver and Montreal before opening the new Banc of California Stadium on April 29th against Seattle.

DC United is also opening a new stadium this summer, as the opponent will be Vancouver on July 14th. In the meantime, DC will play mostly on the road for the next three months until Audi Field is ready to go. DC have played one "home" game so far, at the Soccerplex in nearby Germantown, Maryland. It was a 2-2 draw with Houston which drew a capacity crowd of 5128! Next Saturday, DC United will play at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland (capacity is 30,000) against Columbus.

The new stadium in Los Angeles will hold 22,000 fans. DC's new home will hold 20,000.

As for the situation in Columbus, I have no idea what's really going on there or how this is going to play out. Despite making it to the Eastern Conference finals against eventual MLS champs Toronto in 2017, attendance is down compared to this time last year. Granted, MLS attendance is usually light for the first couple of months in cold weather cities, but there certainly is a concerted effort by Crew fans to not support the team with this particular owner. The league's reputation has been damaged amongst many of its supporters in other cities over this issue, as MLS executives are seen to be favoring a move by the team to Austin, even though there is virtually no groundswell of support there for an MLS team by the City Council or the residents.

At least one and possibly two ownership groups from the Columbus area have stepped up to try and buy the team and keep it in Ohio, but the current owner refuses to sell. Complicating matters for Columbus is the fact that Nashville was recently awarded a new MLS franchise, along with Miami. Nashville's almost as close to Columbus as Columbus is to Chicago, its nearest MLS rival. Then there's FC Cincinnati, which set attendance records for a USL team in 2017. MLS leaders would probably want to locate a team there if Cincinnati ever agreed on a site to play soccer matches (presently, they play at the University of Cincinnati football field, Nippert Stadium).

All in all, it doesn't look good for Columbus to keep the Crew after this season or possibly 2019. Even the announcers on televised games here are taking the corporate office's view that Columbus fans have not done enough to show they are passionate enough to warrant an MLS team. I think their argument is a bit of a crock. Since the Houston Dynamo have moved from the University of Houston to its own facility (capacity is 22,000, just like it is in Columbus), I've never seen it sold out. Lots of empty seats to see, even though enough tickets have been sold to bump up its attendance figures. I don't know why someone would purchase a ticket to an event they never intended to watch in person.
