Verbal crutches Can't Post or

Having watched and loved WIA on the Beeb, where all the characters just spout bollocks all day, mostly starting sentences with "Yes, no, absolutely", I Googled verbal crutches and one of the more bizarre as far as I am concerned is 'Early Doors'. Now I have learned to cope with others such as 'To be Fair' which my other half now uses only her allotted five times a day...any more and there are sanctions...but Early Doors really does grip my shit.
Sadly my old mate Molders from this parish has a habit of writing the phrase, which is even worse than a verbal crutch, and our friend Ashtree has also done the same in the last few days!!
So...in a desperate measure to prevent this ridiculous nonsense going any deeper into our sub-conscience, I propose this...

I hearby state that I have a crisp 20 note here in my office which I will donate to the Macmillan Nurses, due to my lovely mate Bridgette being terminal. However, each time I see 'Early Doors' anywhere on this forum from now until NYD, I shall deduct 50p from it!
Please pass the word and please don't write it a dozen times in a vain attempt at being humourous!!!
You know it makes sense...

As I see it, what you are doing is a wonderful gesture. The term you stated, i won't say it, isn't something I have come across, it's not something used where I come from, or certainly wasn't when I was growing up.

One of the Wikis says it's a Northern term for a pub opening early, or something
along those lines....

"On the wall above your correspondent's desk there are a number of old framed theatre playbills. One of these, for 'Puss in Boots' at the Grand in Glasgow in 1902 refers to the opening times of ***** *****'.
This was, it seems, the moment when hoi polloi were permitted to scramble for unreserved cheap seats before the more decorous patrons turned up.

Roddy Forsyth writing in the Torygraph.

EDIT

The first newspaper reference I can find to "***** *****" is December 1882

Re: [Jaundiced Hack] Verbal crutches [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Certainly a phrase recognised in the north west, and the title of Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne's superb but criminally underrated sitcom that they penned after the Royle Family. Set, unsurprisingly, in a pub - early doors being the term for going for a pint shortly after opening time (from when the pubs were shut in the afternoon).

Think it was Big Ron who introduced it into football.

Speaking of football and verbal crutches, why does almost every pundit now feel the need to tell us, when asked a question, that they were talking about that subject in the studio beforehand? We know guys - it's called rehearsing.

And the perennial favourite on this very forum in the WAYG thread will doubtless start soon....'weather permitting'. We know!

that was quite a funny series as it goes...even James McEvoy had
a part so presumably he was shagging one of the cast?

What on earth makes you think he could be referring to you ?
He said which poster it was and they used the 'offending phrase' in their last WDYG post.

I see nothing wrong with the phrase myself, but will not deprive a charity of funds as some are quite happy to do - 2 so far, on this thread alone, I think.

Edit: The first two mentions have been redacted, so just your 1 now.

Maybe you could make up the shortfall mick....see it as the ticket price of the guilt trip you're keen to send some of us on. Tongue. That's if you think any charity would begrudge missing out on 1 or 2 just to make us appease one poster's irritation with an utterly innocuous phrase.

Re: [paulh66] Verbal crutches [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

There are all sorts of verbal crutches that annoy me.

Last night after football I accompanied two mates into a bar that we had not been into before.

We were greeted by a barman in what I would guess was his early 20s by "Hi Guys what can I get you" Since the combined age of the three of us is about 200, the use of "guys" was annoying, and I nearly replied with "Oh you're buying a round for us are you?".

And then when he brought our three pints to the bar and as he took our money he said "Enjoy"; another of my favourite hate expressions.

Or Susan Cookson from the first series?
That was one of the best comedies ever on television, and, set in Stockport where I work, was extremely well observed.
Worryingly, I do use both the phrase in question (although it's a bit outdated now) and "weather permitting" fairly often.

Gents, this was a lighthearted post which ultimately was to end with a donation to a worthwhile charity. Why in the name of Christ should on or two of you try to sabotage it?
And Chris, please? How can someone who cannot speak or hear have a verbal crutch..so,no I was not referring to you.
We're still on 19 unless the mods can craftily redact a couple of the posts! Happy days.

Not sure what responses - if any - were you wanting in response to your opening post but the discussion seems pretty natural to me and talk of "sabotage" is nonsense.

Actually, I can speak even if I can't hear - but who is Ashtree? Please refer to forumites by their usernames rather than by nicknames which could potentially apply to more than one person and cause confusion.
