National Conference League ARL 2017 Can't Post or Reply Privately

It appears three clubs have secured the NCL management committee's approval to join for the 2017 season. Now (I believe) it goes to a vote of member clubs. The trio are Barrow Island (Barrow), Clock Face Miners (St Helens) and West Bowling (Bradford). Both Barrow Island and West Bowling have played NCL rugby in the past. Barrow Island were founder members of Division Two in 1989.

This may mean Barrow Island have resolved problems with the new pitch they had laid a couple of years ago outside their refurbished Rating Lane clubhouse. It was a disaster, essentially, and led to threats of court action. I'd be surprised if the NCL is happy for the club to use their second pitch which, though railed, slopes steeply - and bizarrely - in several directions from a central crown.

It is being reported Barrow Island, Clock Face Miners and West Bowling have been elected to the NCL for the 2017 season. Their inclusion increases to 14 the number of teams in Division Three (tier four of this flagship competition). No official word on the NCL website or Twitter feed.

In case anybody is wondering how the NCL arrives at 14 teams in Division Three for 2017, Elland have been relegated two divisions (punishment for failing to fulfil a fixture last season). The top three divisions will each have 12 teams.

I presume West Bowling will be playing at a new ground?

The pitch they've been using would not meet the NCL standards.

Last time they were in the NCL, West Bowling played on a pitch next to Bankfoot Cricket Club. I did watch them on that but I'm struggling to recall it (one railed pitch looks pretty much like another!). Is that pitch still available?

Incomers for 2017 confirmed by the NCL website:

http://www.nationalconferenceleague.co.uk/...-clubs-join-ncl-for-

I gather Barrow Island will be using the 'turtle' pitch. It's a real shocker, so maybe the NCL is happy for West Bowling to play on the pitch IanS doesn't rate. What's wrong with it? Does the NCL require anything other than a pitch barrier? Let's face it, the pitch at Underbank Rangers isn't up to much.

According to the 'Clubs' section on the NCL website, West Bowling will be using Clayton's ground at Lidget Green (BD7 2DP). Saw Clayton play there many years ago in a Challenge Cup tie. Presume it's the same ground.

http://www.nationalconferenceleague.co.uk/club/14794-west-bowling

Barrow Island are at LA13 9LR and Clock Face Miners at WA9 4XL.

The NCL rejected applications from four other clubs, it seems.

West Bowling are now listing a different home ground in the 'Clubs' section of the NCL website. It's Emsley Recreation Ground, just off the A6177 as it drops towards Bradford city centre. Postcode BD5 8DT.

That's the poor ground I was referring to. The only spectator facilities were a shipping container serving drinks, no toilets and a fifteen minute walk to the clubhouse. Given the clubhouse is the most important part of NCL setups I'm surprised they've got in. Oh well, at least I've done it, (in a blizzard last January!)

A fifteen minute walk to the clubhouse isn't that uncommon in the NCL. It's about the same distance at Egremont and Kells.

I've had confirmation from West Bowling all their 2017 home games will be played at Emsley Rec. Pleased about that because it's a new 'ground' for me.

Barrow Island tell me they plan to start the 2017 season on the odd-shaped back pitch but hope to move to the relaid pitch (in front of the clubhouse) before the campaign ends. Two bites of the cherry for some!

Re the programmes, I didn't visit any of those three clubs this season (for what it's worth, Hunslet Warriors did the best programme at any of the limited number of games I did attend), but, when I have been to Crosfields previously, it may be worth mentioning they have made no effort to sell programmes and nor do they charge admission. Instead, you have to seek out somebody loitering with a carrier bag near the clubhouse entrance.

I thought I had heard something about Queensbury applying. Has that gone quiet?
