Where is this? Can't Post or Reply Privately

A rather poor quality tv screenshot of WW2 archive film. The narrative suggested it might be somewhere in southern England, possibly the North or South Downs or the Weald but I can't find in those parts a station in open country about half a mile from a tunnel. It really could be anywhere.

People with some expertise in these things would be able to identify which railway company the station originated in and thus give some idea of where it might be from the fencing and lighting on the platform. Sadly I am not one with that expertise.

Be careful of what might be said over the actual pictures. I watched "The First World War in Numbers" last night and the pictures chosen to match the narration were often woefully incorrect.

1. Pinning down the region might be easier if the loco could be identified.
2. Wooden platforms could be found all over the country.
3. My last venture in this field came from one of Michael Portillo's programmes, where train-in-landscape and narrative are indeed often unconnected.

Check out the Great War series on YouTube with Indy Nidel.

There's a similar post on there called WW1 in numbers and
the content is mind boggingly [sic] staggering.

Yes, I've seen his work before. Interesting to get a different (i.e. non-British) view of the Great War.

Looking at the tracks there seems to be a branch line. Somewhere like Dunton Green ??

If it's any consolation, I spent hours looking at 1930s OS maps last night and couldn't find a match.

The points might just be a siding, rather than a branch line.

It is a powerful locomotive, as it seems to be pulling seven or so carriages.

I wonder if the disc on the front of the engine is a Southern Railway headcode?

Looks like a station name board on the near platform, just to the left of the officer's face. If it is, it looks like a short name.

And, so far, the folk over on railforums.co.uk.

Attached are two more scenes from the same film. Given that it was a hotch-potch of sequences they might not be related but if anyone can recognise the street scene and the soot-blackened church entrance and that distinctive poster we might be getting somewhere. Looks a bit northern to me...

With the curved track, tunnel and wooded area, is it possible it could be Merstham

Re: [Mr. T] Where is this? [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I have no idea if this will be of any help but from the soldiers' uniforms this was very early in the war. I would be pretty confident in saying the soldiers are regulars and from a Fusilier regiment (or possibly the Grenadier Guards). Identifying the regiment may be some help as we can then check locations of battalions.

The street scenes don't look southern England to me.

Like Paulc I have been looking at possible sites in south England using the OS maps overlaid with rail lines in Colonel Cobb's "The Railways of Great Britain - A Historical Atlas" and found nothing. West Meon looked possible but a search of old images showed its station didn't have wooden platforms.

Look at the left of the photo. There's a white patch. That looks like steam issuing from a tunnel, often seen after the emergence of a train. And that hill is taller than at Weybourne and the land rises on the extreme left. At Weybourne the land falls to give a distant view of the sea.
