World Cup 2026 and 2030 Can't Post or Reply Privately

Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay have announced a joint bid for the 2030 World Cup, to celebrate 100 years since the first World Cup in Uruguay.

This will (reportedly) come in to competition with UEFA's preferrred bid of a British Isles or English bid for 2030.

As far as 2026 goes, the joint USA, Canada, Mexico bid looks strong favourites against the Morocco offering. Not least because a Morocco tournament will no doubt have to be switched to Winter.

Having two consecutive world cups in the 'America's' may be the downfall for the Argentina et al bid, despite the romance of returning to Uruguay 100 years later.

But I suspect it really depends on who is prepared to bribe the most officials!

Morocco's bid would probably fail for financial reasons rather than weather related reasons. Spain hosted the WC in 1982 and there can't be that much of a difference between Spain and Morocco, weather wise, until you get towards the southern end.

A England/UK bid for 2030 might be FIFA trying to take the mickey by building up a bid but all along preferring the South American bid, which would, of course, but a winter WC, June/July being winter in the southern hemisphere. Laugh

Now reports are flying around that Qatar is going to get its hosting privileges for 2022 pulled by FIFA. What would happen if this turns out to be true?

The only other time I recall a World Cup venue being changed was in 1986, but that was at the request of Colombian officials, not FIFA.

If it were to happen, it would make more sense to give 2022 to USA, which would open the way for a combined British bid in 2026 for Wales, England, and Scotland. There would be plenty of stadiums available for use in the 48-team field. Then, 2030 could be jointly hosted by Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina.

England are one of a very few countries that are capable of hosting a 48 team WC on it's own. Most of the stadiums already exist and are new with several with 60k+ capacities. Unfortunately 4 of those are in London. There are several 50k_ stadiums around the country, Liverpool, Newcastle and 2 in Manchester and several stadiums with 40k+ capacities. Villa Park, Elland Road & Hillsborough would need makeovers.

I think Uruguay should host/co-host 2030, or at least the final.

If we were parachuted in to host the 2022 WC, then we'd not have too much trouble finding 10-12 stadiums, something like this:

Wembley
Emirates / New White Hart Lane - probably not both
London Stadium
Villa Park
King Power - expected to increase to 42k capacity in next few years
St James Park
Stadium of Light
Anfield
Old Trafford
Etihad Stadium

Work required, but given a couple of years notice:
Elland Road
Hillsborough

I've assumed New Everton and New Chelsea won't be ready by 2022

Middlesbrough, Derby, Southampton, Wolves could probably knock up an New stand in a couple of years as well if required.

The KC was supposed to inline for a capacity increase to 40k and Coventry is usually near the top of venues to be used for major sporting events.

I think Norwich, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United & Portsmouth could potentially be added as venues as well.

A World Cup stadium needs to have 10K dedicated parking spaces for matchdays, ideally on site but can include areas up to 1.6km away.

That many parking spaces in or near an English stadium would possible mean demolishing a couple of housing estates. I don;'t think even the area around Wembley can provide that much parking.

Pride Park at Derby has had U21 games & was on the shortlist for a WC stadium(which we got knocked back by FIFA). So Southampton, Boro, Newcastle, Sunderland, Stoke, Leicester, West Ham could all play lesser games at a WC tournament.

You don't need 40,000 anymore. Kaliningrad and Yekaterinburg's stadiums in the 2018 World Cup are only 35,000.

Those seats at the top have a great view of the top of the roof and the goal area. When Belgium/Holland hosted Euro2000 Charleroi had temporary and England played Germany there. Iwouldn't want to sit in that part of the stadium in Yekaterinburg I would want a seat with a view and a roof.

The photo does look like something Chris "lego man" Smith could build, and probably better.

I wonder if someone will try and climb that during a WC game?
