CONIFA - Confederation of Independent Football Associations

I was flicking through this months World Soccer magazine & it had 4 pages about the CONIFA Euro Cup. Interestingly it said that next years CONIFA World Cup (16 teams) will be held in London at amateur & university grounds with the Final at QPR's Loftus Road.

Other websites suggest that the venue is still TBC.

The CONIFA website advises that 6 teams have already qualified: Barawa (hosts), Tamil Eelam, Abkhazia, Tibet, Western Armenia & Felvidek. The competition starts on Thursday 31 May with group games with the final on Saturday 9 June.

I also came across a website/forum roonba.fr.yuku.com which mentioned a further 4 teams that have qualified: Kiribati, Cascadia, Northern Cyprus & Padania.

Looking at various websites the hosts are Barawa which I googled today & they are associated with Somalia.

I also went on the Barawa FA twitter page & there was details of an upcoming tournament which had been tweeted from MANXIFA.
It's the Niamh Challenge Cup an international football tournament being held at Haringey Borough:
Wed 9 Aug: KO:1800: Chagos Island v Barawa
Sat 12 Aug: KO:1945: Ellen Vannin (Isle of Man) v Barawa
Sun 13 Aug: KO:1500: Chagos Island v Ellen Vannin (Isle of Man)

I have to say I would be surprised if QPR are given permission from the FA to host this; as this is technically unauthorised football could the FA be seen to sanction a non FIFA (who have jurisdiction over the FA) approved match taking place at such a high profile ground?

On Sat 5th August Barawa beat Tamileelam 3-0 at Haringey Borough's ground. KO was 19:45 but I only knew about game early following morning. Not that I'd have gone to watch this.

Regarding the CONIFA World Cup next year potentially in London. I was advised 3 of the ground they hoped to use are Barnet, Haringey Borough & QPR. Whether they are allowed as stated above is another matter.

They might get round it by hiring the grounds from the ground operators rather than the clubs. The Hive is separate from Barnet FC I think, and if it's not I reckon Mr K would have no problem separating them in order to hire the groin out.

Looking into I further, I dont think FIFA care. The Western Armenia team played Olympique de Marseille II and I've seen various references to high-ish profile teams and grounds being involved. It's not like the FA with women's football for so many years...

Generally, I do not think FIFA care, with the exception of those teams where there is a political conflict with a FIFA member.

The CONIFA team whose presence causes most political problems is Tibet. The Chinese have a lot of political clout, and object vehmently to the idea of the independent Tibet Football Team.

So Ellen Vannin (Isle of Man) win the competition.

At the game last night was a Michael Page. I jut googled who he is & he's a kickboxer/boxer.

I was also advised Barawa hope to play a game in November against Rangers of London. I think I read on another thread about a team called London Rangers.

The draw for the 2018 CONIFA World Cup is to be held on January 6th 2018. Tournament from 31st May to 10th June.

Pot 1: Abkazia (2016 winners), Barawa (hosts (UK)), Padania (4th in 2016) & Panjab (2nd in 2016)
Pot 2: Tamil Eelam, Northern Cyprus (3rd in 2016), United Koreans of Japan & Szekely Land
Pot 3: Felvidek, Western Armenia, Kiribati & Ellan Vannin (Isle of Man)
Pot 4: Tibet, Cascadia, Matabeleland & Kabylie

I´ve still not seen a list of grounds being used so would assume this will be announced after the draw.

There appears there may be a tournament on May 26 & 27 called the Surrey International Open. Possible with 4 or 6 clubs. Possibly at somewhere like Carshalton has been mentioned. Wikpedia also has a page set up.

There´s also a possibility about Yorkshire hosting an event in May as well but details are a bit vague.

Apparently Yorkshire are playing Ellan Vannin on 28/01/18 at Yorkshire Nu-Builds Stadium, Fitzwilliam, West Yorkshire.
-
On 06/05/18 Surrey are playing Barawa at Fisher.
-
The draw for the CONIFA 2018 World Cup was made earlier today in Northern Cyprus. The games are being played in London & the probable 4 venues still to be decided. A couple of teams were put in different pots after an error was spotted.
-
GROUP 1
1. Barawa
2. Ellan Vannin
3. Tamil Eelam
4. Cascadia
-
GROUP 2
1. Abkhazia
2. Northern Cyprus
3. Felvidek
4. Tibet
-
GROUP 3
1. Padania
2. Szekely Land
3. Kiribati
4. Matabeleland
-
GROUP 4.
1. Panjab
2. United Koreans of Japan
3. Western Armenia
4. Kabylie
-

Fixtures etc to be sorted but the rough schedule (apparently) would probably be the following with time slots varying a tad from day to day:
-
30/05/18 - Team arrives
31/05/18 - 8 group games
01/06-18 - rest day
02/06/18 - 8 group games
03/06/18 - 8 group games
04/06/18 - rest day
05/06/18 - 4 quarter-finals & 4 x 9th to 16th place games
06/06/18 - rest day
07/06/18 - 2 semi-finals, 2 x 5th to 8th place games, 2 x 9th to 12th place games & 2 x 13th to 16th place games
08/06/18 - rest day
09/06/18 - Final & 7 other placement games
10/06/18 - Team departures

Re: [pinewoodste] CONIFA [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

The CONIFA has a disparate selection of members, and seems not to take too much notice of who or where they are.
Hence a large portion of the teams are British based

Looking at the 16 for the World Cup we have
1) Genuine nations which could progress to FIFA
Kiribati

2) Disputed states who cannot get recognition for political reasons, (already self governing)
Northern Cyprus
Abkhazia

3) Tibet. Run from the Tibet "government in exile".
As a country, Tibet broke away from China in 1911, and was "invaded" in 1950.
The government in exile was started with CIA funding as an attempt to destabilise China, but after China-USA relations were normalised (Nixon!), they have had to make do with the occasional donation from Hollywood. [This may be a biased assessment]
The Chinese government suffers from paranoia over Tibet representation, which gives them more publicity than ignoring things like the football team and the Dalai Lama

4) Diaspora from specific groups of people
Tamil Eelan - UK, Canada, Switzerland. The people are ethnically connected to the Tamil states in Sri Lanka, which fought a long but losing civil war. There are also Tamil areas in India. Much of the Indian communities in Malaysia and Singapore are Tamil, but they are not in this team.
Barawa - Somalis in UK
Panjab - people from the Punjab region, in UK.

5) Minority Populations, (as a method of bonding a community)
Felvidek - Hungarians in Slovakia
Western Armenia - in Turkey
United Koreans in Japan - there is a large community of Koreans in Japan, known as Zainichi. They also have a team in the Japanese non-league levels. They have suffered from citizenship issues since the second world war. Many have family allegiance to North Korea, but don't want to live there. They send money to their cousins across the water.
Szekely Land - Hungarians is the Szekely area of Romania

6) Regional non-nations teams
Cascadia - Western USA/Canada borders
Padania - Northern Italy, a bit more contentious, as this is the area where the Lega Nord would like independence
Matabeleland - Western Zimbabwe
Kabylie - Area within Algeria
Ellan Vannin - Isle of Man

I am sure some on here will debate my analysis

Just looked into this, tickets are apparently already available for Bromley and Sutton games, at £11 each. I was expecting that they'd be welcoming people in for free, or at least a minimal sum. Genuinely surprised at £11.

Or as most are double headers, that would be £22. I would have thought they would have charged less. But still, must watch Tibet on 31st May.

Surely they are not going to clear the ground after the first match before the second lot of spectators are admitted.
The presence of Tibet in the competition will really piss off the Chinese (hopefully).

I have asked the question as to whether the £11 covers two games of an Enfield Town director who rather berated me on Twitter. But from the advance ticket site already selling for the games at Bromley and Sutton, it does appear it's £11 per game.

Edit: Said ETFC director has confirmed it is £11 per game

I was intending on watching games on the 3 weekend dates but I thought £11 was a bit expensive for a double header. Now it appears it's £11 for 1 game, I'm astounded. Not sure I'll bother now as much as I'd like to see these unusual games.

From a reply on Twitter: £1 is a donation to one of the teams and £1 is a booking fee. The remaining £9 goes towards covering teams accommodation and other operational costs.

Probably staging the event in London is more expensive than elsewhere and hence you can question the choice of location.

Presumably if £1 is a booking fee, then tickets should only be £10 on the day. I wonder how sales are going?

Incidentally, CONIFA's Twitter feed states that Kiribati have withdrawn from the competition, to be replaced by Tuvalu.
