North Berks League 2017/18 Can't Post or

No confirmed line-ups but Steventon are asking for players and saying they are in Division One for the coming season. They finished 3rd in Division Two last year.

But the big news is, after many years of no football in the village of Appleford they will once again be represented in the North Berks. The club have reformed and will be playing in division five. They have set up a club website already.

Appleford is a ground (pitch) many will have seen as it is next to the Oxford to Didcot railway line, in fact it has a station though to say the service is frequent would be stretching a point. I think I played at the pitch on a Sunday many moons ago but certainly have never seen a game at the venue.

It's a pitch that has long intrigued me.

From passing trains, I have only ever seen it being used by U16s - never seen or known of a adult side using it. I can remember Abingdon Town FC were due to play a pre-season friendly there maybe eight years ago which I planned to attend, but it was switched to Culham Road.

NBL Fulltime is beginning to be changed for 17/8. It's a bit of a hotchpotch at the moment but putting 2 & 2 together and maybe getting 5, it looks like 5 clubs are being promoted from division 2 to 1. Only 9 saw out the season the top division and two of those Wallingford and Kintbury have left. As Harwell and Hanney are listed in the second 17/8 draft of division one on Fulltime I'm presuming five are coming up to make 12 team top division. Hungerford Town Swifts who won division two we presume are no longer as they went to the Hellenic then pulled out.

Looking at Fulltime it looks though there may four divisions this season not five.

Seen a Tweet from a former poster who is on the league committee. Four divisions of twelve plus Cholsey are joining the league. Cholsey has a station in the same road as the ground.

The committee wanted to go to four divisions last year but the clubs overruled them.

The clubs I was told also decided a few years ago not to pursue step 7 status for the league.

Burghclere have folded, though this appears to have happened before the league AGM that is why the 7th placed team in Division Two last season has ended up being promoted. Presume they will reappear somewhere at some point as it's a reasonable set up, they sold nice coffee, rolls and pies when I visited.

Dorchester have moved to the Oxfordshire Senior League.

Crowmarsh reform and are placed in Division Two, not sure which pitch they will be on as one of their pitches is next to the burnt out shell of the South Oxfordshire District Council Complex and may be unusable.

Cholsey United are placed directly into division three so I presume they are formed from a local Sunday side or someone moving to the venue.

Letcombe Res who are newly (reformed) are based on Hungerford Town's Devlopment side and the tie up between the two clubs.

With the league going from 5 to 4 division's there has been large scale promotions.

Think they lose one of the clubs shortly sadly. The Witney & District have been approached by one of the teams asking to come into our league.
They want to pull their first team and play just the reserves in the lower league.
The North Berks have, I believe refused, hence their request to us.
We have also refused to accept them.
I wont name names as not fair to the teams involved.

Grove Rangers appear to have withdrawn according to a Tweet a few days ago. The Tweet says stepping up from Division 5 to Division 2 is a to bigger jump. Grove's first team were in Division 3 last season while the Reserves were in Division 5. The first team in theory were promoted to Division 2 but it appears they may have gone and the reserves were going to step in to replace them but have decided the jump is to much and have resigned.

Cumnor Minors are down as playing their first home game at Milton United, presume the second pitch. Last season the played at one of the old Botley United grounds.

A league official said (I asked one yesterday at a Hop game) it is dressing room issues with the above clubs. At Appleford there is no referee's room. Despite not having any real football furniture rules the league are very strict on dressing rooms. At this level it is really the players and ref that matter.

Crikey if we had that rule in the Witney and District we would lose 8 teams at the drop of a hat.
Does seem a bit excessive, surely the ref can change in one of the changing rooms?

There is a story (maybe an urban myth) of a referee who had to change in one of the team's rooms and after the game found money in his shoe.

No sign of Harwell Village in Division 1.

Benson Lions & Crowmarsh Gifford both appear to have gone from Division 2.
