Queen or The Beatles

or an artist of your choice...

For me, Queen JUST shade it, having THE all-time front-man of any band - Freddie Mercury.

(and you thought this would be an Election/Polly-tics thread...nope!)

I have to go along with Freddie Mercury being the best frontman/showman, he was just class but I'm a Beatles fan so have to put them at the top. Queen are very near the top of my list though. Best live act though is Elvis Costello who I saw at Montreux many years ago

The Beatles transformed popular music. In terms of impact no one comes close.

The Beatles.

I remember their albums seeming to be very much better than anything else around at the time.

Then along Sgt Pepper and they were in a league of their own.

Queen, though are great and Freddie Mercury, as you say, the all time front man.

I still remember Live Aid in 1985 and Freddie was the best artist on the day by far.

It's a mystery to me why you've chosen Edith and not Toyah.
Any regrets ?

Muhammad Ali was the greatest.
Rock music is more opinion than facts, but I think the Beatles come ahead of Queen

I think I'd put thousands of groups ahead of Queen.

Maybe tens of thousands.

Although I bought Sgt Pepper LHCB I was never a big fan.
Can't recall purchasing any of Queens work.

Neil Young however is still the greatest IMO.

I once annoyed my sister by describing Queen as the best comedy group ever. My tongue was definitely in my cheek at the time, but by the same token so were Queen's tongues with much of their music. Nothing wrong with it, each to their own, but I could never quite see it, myself...

I've never really seen what all the fuss is about with regard to The Beatles. I like Queen, and I was lucky enough to see them in their pomp, and it was a fabulous occasion. If I had to vote for a "big" band for best ever I would have to go for Pink Floyd. I've been into them for over 30 years, and their music never gets old.

An amazing deconstruction by Howard Goodall of the Sgt Pepper album on BBC2 tonight:

Sgt Pepper's Musical Revolution.

I'll never listen to one of the greatest albums ever produced in the same way again.

Catch up with it on i-player.

What an excellent programme it is, infact superb. Howard Goodall is very good done a number of very watchable programmes in recent, as well as being entertaining and a good composer.

Television
Goodall has composed the main themes and incidental music for several popular UK comedy programmes, including Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Mr. Bean, The Thin Blue Line, The Vicar of Dibley, The Catherine Tate Show, 2point4 Children and QI, on which he has also appeared twice as a panellist. It was as an undergraduate at Christ Church, Oxford that he met the actor Rowan Atkinson and the writer Richard Curtis, his collaborators on several of these projects, including his first break into TV, Not The Nine O'Clock News.

Howard Goodall is very good done a number of very watchable programmes in recent, as well as being entertaining and a good composer.

His BBC series 'The Story of Music' was presented in a very similar manner to the Sgt Pepper prog. The only surprise was that his assertion that the American blues owe much to Anglo-Saxon folk song, including an early ballad called 'The Birmingham Boys', did not cause a media storm and result in his public humiliation.
