Is the part of the body with which he scored this goal of any significance?

Not really Paul. It's the bizarre nature of the goal that is significant.

Is it a long range headed own goal?

Post 68 says it's not an own goal, John.

I'm reduced to wild guesses with this one. Did he stop the ball on the goal-line, kneel down and head the ball over the line?

NO he didn't but it is as unusual as that, in the sense that it's rarely seen.

The wilder the guess may just secure the answer.Wink

What a lovely thought but sadly no acrobatics were involved Paul.

To get this one over the line I would suggest that we allow two seperate guesses per day if thats OK with the mods.

Think in terms of the type of goal you would like to see scored, you may just stumble upon the answer.

Meantime it was NOT...an own goal, a headed goal or an acrobatic strike. No free kicks were involved and it was not weather related.
But it was scored in a London cup match prior to 1908.

Trawling the history of London Calies may give you the answer if you have access to those records.

Just realised I have a reprint of "The Story of the London Caledonian Football Club"...

London Charity Cup final 1905 against Casuals, Casuals keeper doing a mighty place kick that sent the ball over the half-way line where Andy Ralston met and returned it into goal with a terrific volley. From the time the ball left Driffield's (Casuals keeper) foot the ball never touched the ground until it was safely in the net.

Safe to say I have also never seen a goal kick returned into goal with a volley!

YES but I will need more than that to award a goal.

GOAL!!!

From the Dulwich Hamlet historians records.....
The Calies played for a time at the old Greyhound pitch in Dulwich Village.
The bait of a 15 guarantee - a tidy sum in those days - even brought Aston Villa to Dulwich, but unfortunately the gate receipts were only 14/19/6 in old money. As an early Calies official remarked, "Bang went saxpence".

So the club migrated north of the river - to Tufnell Park - where they shared the ground of the local side for many years. Possibly their finest performance in the old days was a win in the London Charity Cup Final in 1896 over the then-mighty Old Carthusians.

A UNIQUE INCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN THEY LIFTED THIS PARTICULAR CUP FOR A SECOND TIME SOME TEN YEARS LATER, AGAINST A POWERFUL CASUALS SIDE.

WITH A STRONG GOAL-KICK THE CASUALS 'KEEPER, SENT THE BALL SAILING OVER THE HALF-WAY LINE WHERE THE CALIES RIGHT BACK, ANDY RALSTON, A TALL, LEGGY BIG BONED YOUNGSTER WITH THE KICKING POWER OF A MULE, RETURNED IT FULL ON THE VOLLEY.

TO EVERYONE'S AMAZEMENT, IT FLEW IN UNDER THE BAR BEFORE THE POOR 'KEEPER REALISED WHAT WAS HAPPENING. ACTUALLY, FROM THE TIME IT LEFT THE GROUND FROM THE GOAL-KICK THE BALL NEVER TOUCHED THE GROUND AGAIN UNTIL IT ENTERED THE NET.

I've seen goals galore scored from inside ones own half but nothing that approaches the Ralston effort. This one comes close but it was from 'open' play.https://www.theguardian.com/...chilean-league-video

Well played Michael and over to you.......
