Swindon Advertiser

Swindon Town Wembley hero Peter Noble has died, aged 72, on Saturday 6th May 2017

Forward Noble, a member of the revered 1969 League Cup winning team at Wembley who also played for Newcastle United, Burnley and Blackpool, played every match on Town's road to Wembley 48 years ago, scoring four goals, including the extra time winner in the semi-final replay against the Clarets, whom he was later to sign for.

Noble was signed from Newcastle for a fee of 8,000 in January 1968 and made his debut as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Walsall at the beginning of the following month.

He scored 16 goals in the following league campaign, but his heroics in the victorious League Cup run, proved his key contribution.

Noble was Town's top scorer with 12 the season after their Wembley win and again with 14 in 1971-72, having also helped the club to promotion to the Second Division for the first time and win the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1970.

At the end of the following season the Sunderland born player moved to Burnley for 40,000 and, after being played in a variety of positions, went on to become their top scorer in several of the following seasons.

Noble went on to make 299 appearances for the Clarets between 1973-1979, scoring 80 goals.

Prior to his league career, Noble combined an amateur with Northern League Consett by working as a painter and a decorator, subsequently joining Newcastle at the age of 20 in 1964.

Noble was sold by Burnley to Blackpool for 25,000 in January 1980, but retired in 1983 and later ran a sports shop in Burnley Market Hall for almost 20 years.

I remember him scoring all 4 goals for Burnley in a 4-4 draw with Norwich. Burnley were 3-0 up with about 10 minutes left, Norwich pulled it back to 3-3, Noble scired a 4th in stoppage time before Norwich equalised again with virtually the last kick. Never seen a player who scored 4 look so gutted. Memories of a great player though.

I was fortunate to have seen him playing at Bramall Lane, first for Swindon and then for Burnley. A good solid pro, the sort of guy you'd want to have in your team, especially when the going got tough. A leader of men and well thought of.

Sad to hear he's passed on at a relatively early age.

One of those players from my youth who is instantly recognisable in pictures and footage by his comb over ala Ralph, Bobby, Terry Hennessey etc. Makes me realise I am no spring chicken now when the likes of him leave us.
