Given the hand-brake u-turn by Spreadsh*t Phil yesterday it appears a few troublesome Tory MPs can create chaos to this Government with it's small majority.

With all the joys of Brexit and Neverendum looming maybe Mrs May needs to seize an excuse to call a snap General Election and hope for a sizeable majority whilst Jezza is still hobbling the opposition. Unimpressed

Not to mention up to 20 Tories being investigated for electoral fraud - and a Tory working majoirty of 17.

Not possible because of the Fixed Term Parliament Act.

Not possible because of the Fixed Term Parliament Act.

It is possible but it needs the Government to lose a vote of confidence or for a motion to dissolve parlaiment to receive the backing of two thirds of MPs. If a Government brought forward a motion to dissolve parliament would the opposition ever vote against it? It would surely indicate that they had no confidence in improving their number of MPs at an election and would make them a laughing stock. Of course it could be blocked by the governing party's own MPs who might be enjoying being able to hold their leader to ransom as a result of having a small majority.

Consider also that the next General Election will be fought on new boundaries which reduces the number of MP's by 50.

In other words, it's not possible to call a 'snap' general election.

Depends on when it is called. The Boundary Commissions proposals are still out for consultation at the moment.

You're right, of course, that Mrs May can't do what PMs used to do and simply announce that they were calling an election. So no snap election in that sense.

However, if the Tories thought political necessity demanded it, I'd expect them to be as ruthless as usual and jump through the relevant hoops sharpish to bring one about.

What might deter them though would be the fear of a complete clean sweep for the SNP north of the border.

That would entail precious little change from the status quo (is it 56 of 59 seats the SNP currently hold?) I don't think the possibility of losing their one MP north of the border will have much impact on such decisions.

The proposed changes to the number of MPs will reduce the number of Scottish constituencies from 59 to 53. Unless they manage to win some seats outside Scotland next time, the number of SNP MPs will be reduced even if they win 100% of the vote in Scotland.

The loss of the odd seat would have little relevance to the Tory majority or lack of it at Westminster.

However, I'd have thought the psychological impact of the three main UK parties losing their last fig leaf of representation north of the border and the Scottish nation being solely represented at Westminster by the SNP, would be problematic for Mrs M.

If that happened I could see a big rise in Lib Dem seats and an increased Tory Majority.

Something like this:
Conservatives: 383
Labour: 150
SNP: 50
Lib Dem: 40
Northern Ireland Parties: 18
PC: 4
Others: 5
Total: 650

Here's Peston's take on it & he's pretty certain that there's going to be a Snap GE. The Tories are going to try & head off the Scottish independence 2nd or is it now the 3rd referendum.

Re: [windydcfc] General Election??? [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

It must be a huge temptation for Mrs May to bring about a General Election even if it means losing a contrived vote of no confidence. Especially, since Tom Watson's warning of a Momentum-Unite plot shows Labour seem determined to continue to fight each other like rats in a sack.
One lovely scenario would be the Tories supporting a vote of no confidence in the Government whilst Labour voted against it in a desperate attempt to fend off an unwelcome General Election.
Ironically, Brexit gives Sturgeon the excuse for a 2nd Independence Referendum vote, but that Neverendum gives Mrs M the excuse of citing the inevitable uncertainty as grounds for a General Election to seek backing for her Brexit Government.

By triggering Article 50 on March 29 then if the Cons lose the next election then they have forced a new government to proceed with brexit and they can blame the new government when the UK is hung out to dry by the EU.

With no real creditable opposition the Cons do seem unlikely to lose a May election

Personally, I think the author sounds scared stiff of a General Election being called at the present time.

Despite the Fixed Term Parliaments Act, the pressure will be on Mrs M to do whatever's necessary to bring about an early election whilst the Tories ride high in the polls. No doubt it has been pointed out to her what happened to Gordon Brown and Labour after he decided not to call one after he became PM.

Re: [jon b] General Election??? [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Even if a GE was called, it would not suit any of the opposition parties:

Labour - Rudderless under Captain Birds Eye/Corbyn.

Liberals - Have less than 10 seats and, despite gaining Richmond, they will struggle to win seats nationally especially in working-class areas who are slowly turning towards UKIP.

Greens - Might hold on to Brighton, despite the area being ranked as one of the 20 worst areas for rubbish collection - a key Green pledge missed in their only constituency! The LGBTQ vote may just keep them in control (although a number of LGBTQ people are turning more towards the Liberals in Brighton).

UKIP - Without Nigel Farage, they have lost momentum and recently they have become more famous for in-fighting and battles for power in both their NEC council and the Senedd. A new Nigel is needed, or they might as well go back into the Tory fold.

Plaid - Will hold on to traditional seats but will struggle to get voted into the South Wales industrial heartlands. Could see rises in numbers of vote as a protest against Labour though.

SNP - More an 'unruly mob' than a serious opposition to Theresa May, no change in numbers but some north of the border might well ask what have they achieved thus far?

Were a GE to be called, it would be a Tory win by over 330 IMO.

(and before anybody asks, I can't stand any of them - Branson should have taken over Britain a long time ago!)

I can't stand any of them or Branson, he used to live around here and no one has a good word for him. Flooding the area around his house by building unauthorised landscaping did not help. Awful to work for I was also told.
