2016 Speedway Season Can't Post or Reply Privately

Well the new speedway season is up and running still 3 Leagues as per last season.

Elite League Same 8 Teams as last season

Premier League Same 13 Teams as last season

National League Same 10 Teams as last season plus the return of the Isle of Wight and Belle Vue have added a team in this division to make a total of 12 Teams.
Also this Division has a sponsor Travel Plus Tours.

The so called big news is the opening of the new National Speedway Stadium at Belle Vue Manchester, which opened it doors to 6000 people today and 1 hour after the meeting was due to start it was postponed due to an unfit track (No Racing took place). I was told today by someone that the track was iffy and the meeting might be in doubt. Well they were right and what a PR disaster for the sport theat never really learns. Unsure

Just read the online version of the Manchester Evening News's take on this. I see the riders refused to ride, claiming the track was dangerously soft, particularly on the third and fourth bends. With 5,000 fans in attendance, Chris Morton described the outcome as a disaster. I wonder what the late Peter Craven, in whose memory the meeting was staged, would make of the amateurish state of modern British speedway?

EDIT: Today's (21/3) press and practice day for Belle Vue has also been cancelled. Will the track be fit for Friday afternoon's Elite League opener against Wolverhampton?

Very unfair to blame the riders. The track was not fit to ride, the riders should never have been asked to ride, the track should have been built before the first meeting.

I take it you were there, Jim? I'd like to go this Friday but certainly wouldn't want to be part of a repeat of the Peter Craven fiasco. What are the chances of Belle Vue getting the track sorted this week, would you say?

Brings to mind a couple of 'opening meetings' I've attended in the past: Carmarthen and Redcar. Those tracks, on those days, were unfit for speedway but the meetings went ahead. Probably did more harm to the sport's image than a postponement!

Well the sport is lurching from one disaster to another and the season is not 2 weeks old yet. Plymouth have folded after just 2 meetings this season , though the BSPA have kept their place in the league for the time being to see if anyone will rescue them, cant blame Belle Vue for this though !

Plymouth's opening meeting, an invitation event, attracted a 'crowd' of just 450. The club's break even figure is 800. The city's daily newspaper reports the Devils were losing more than £2,000 a week last season. Only donations kept them going. With Plymouth's major backer pulling out over the winter, I'm surprised they even contemplated running in 2016.

Seems a strange decision to stop after 1 home and 1 away meeting, they have 2 Aussies in their team and this weekend they were at home to Somerset when they would have a got a better gate than the 450 last week. Will be interesting to see if anything else comes out of the woodwork, i wonder if they still have a lot of debts outstanding from last season ?

As you say, a rather odd decision not to give it a bit longer, especially as opening night was reportedly very cold (nothing changes, eh?) and the meeting an individual event (which don't appeal to many fans nowadays). Looks like one benefactor effectively baled out the Devils in 2015. Given the scale of last season's losses (and £2,000-plus a week adds up quickly), if the promotion was keen to run in 2016, it might have been more sensible to drop to the cheaper bottom tier. I suppose it could still be an option, if anyone can be found to take up the reins.

That said, the promotion might have looked at a 450 crowd and thought 'we've got no chance'. During my time covering Middlesbrough Speedway at Cleveland Park in the 90s, whilst working on Teesside's evening newspaper, the promoter decided to experiment with a second team, comprising local kids, operating in the bottom tier (was it the Academy League then?). The first home meeting for Cleveland Bays attracted 150 paying customers (at the time, the senior team, Boro Bears, averaged about 850). The promoter, aware the Bays was going to prove a pointless exercise, pulled the plug immediately. Maybe that's how the Plymouth promotion felt.

PETERBOROUGH have been forced to call off their mouth-watering Easter Monday derby clash against Ipswich due to major repair work at the East of England Showground.

The League Cup match has been postponed on health and safety grounds as a six-figure project to correct a number of electrical faults at the Alwalton venue will not be completed in time to allow it to go ahead.

Promoter Ged Rathbone said: “It goes without saying it is a huge blow to see our first meeting of the season postponed.

“We can only apologise for the inconvenience it causes for supporters of both clubs.

“But there is no one more disappointed than myself as we face the prospect of losing one of our most money-spinning days of the season.”

Belle Vue v Wolves on Good Friday has been postponed. The National Speedway Stadium track still isn't fit for purpose.

Not all doom and gloom: Berwick plan to build a training track near Duns. Anyone remember the former training track at Felton, south of Berwick? Its young prospects competed in the (so-called, Halifax were also members) Scottish Junior League as Felton Flyers.

In the credit column, Premier League Plymouth, despite announcing their closure recently, are to soldier on.

If you haven't seen the final heat from last weekend's Grand Prix in Gorzow (which was on BT) - have a gander at this!

A question mark (once again) hangs over Berwick Speedway. The Bandits have been put up for sale by John Anderson, promoter for nine years. He says he won't be at the helm for 2017. Berwick's last meeting of 2016 is tomorrow (10/9), with Rye House Rockets the visitors to Shielfield Park.

Finally got to the new National Speedway stadium tonight to see :-

Belle Vue 48
Poole 45

Admission to grandstand was £20 and programme £3. Good entertainment, no rider fell in any of the 15 heats, all over in under 2 hours, despite a few restarts for tapes issues. Definitely worth a visit. New track is literally next door to the old one.
