Man City fans reported for .... booing. Can't Post or Reply Privately

Some Manchester City fans reportedly booed during the playing of the
UEFA Champions League anthem the other evening.

Apparently disciplinary proceedings have begun...wow if
the behemoth wins that one then the implications are super scary...

What next, programme burning in the streets of Nyon? Shocked

FA Vase semi programme wanted: 2001 Taunton v Clitheroe.

Can't understand why they booed the UEFA anthem? If they don't like the competition they should vote with their feet and not turn up to those matches.

I cannot believe that you lot are taking it so lightly....
Has some serious ramifications if the club gets done.

Mostly to do with the treatment of fans who'd booked, and paid for, travel to Moscow, only to find UEFA then ordered CSKA to play City behind closed doors.

From the Manchester Evening News website ...

But the final straw was the way in which City fans were treated last season, when Uefa decided to punish CSKA Moscow for their fans' racism and violence by closing the stadium.
Many Blues had already bought visas and booked flights and hotels – but Uefa refused to countenance any form of compensation.
And on the night, Uefa was uninterested in a clear flouting of the stadium closure by around 400 CSKA fans – while City fans who tried to get in were hunted down and evicted.

I disagree strongly with UEFA's action on this but I don't think it's so much a thin end of a dangerous new wedge, more a case of pushing the boundaries to the limit on its existing stance on unacceptable chanting, banners etc.

If the club is punished, I doubt the anthem will be given the respect UEFA crave at its next airing....

On the plus side, if City are fined, presumably UEFA's president will allow them at least nine years to pay it....

I'd forgotten all about that, sounds as if your theory is correct.

All fans of competing clubs in this competition should now treat this anthem in the same way. UEFA will soon get sick of the bad publicity it is bringing to their door, what is the next step for them anyway, threaten to have games played behind closed doors or why not go one further and threaten to boot them out...

These are the relevant regulations:

Article 16 - Order and security at UEFA competition matches

1 Host associations and clubs are responsible for order and security both inside and around the stadium before, during and after matches. They are liable for incidents of any kind and may be subject to disciplinary measures and directives unless they can prove that they have not been negligent in any way in the organisation of the match.

2 However, all associations and clubs are liable for the following inappropriate behaviour on the part of their supporters and may be subject to disciplinary measures and directives even if they can prove the absence of any negligence in relation to the organisation of the match:

g) the disruption of national or competition anthems;

So, even if Manchester City had forced their spectators to sit an exam in what was permitted and gagged them during the anthem, they are responsible for any disruption. I would suggest they try to get off the hook by questioning what 'disruption' means. According to my dictionary it is the Disturbance or problems which interrupt an event, activity, or process. The anthem was not interrupted therefore they are innocent.
