The main thing that comes to mind is; I thought the FA always placed clubs geographically close to each other in the same groups at this early stage?

There are loads over 100 miles - Congleton to Jarrow, Colwyn Bay to Workington, Whitley Bay to Matlock, Didcot to VCD, Thatcham to Hastings, Barnstaple to Poole, Merthyr to Plymouth, Almondsbury to Bodmin, possibly more.

They did but received complaints from clubs about meeting the same old faces/clubs from their own league

Even in the Extra Preliminary Round, it's not unheard to have teams travelling over 100 miles to a game.

Last match:
Monday 17th October 2016
Aveley 1-1 Phoenix Sports (Isthmian League Division 1 North)

Next scheduled match:
Tuesday 18th October 2016
Burnham Ramblers v Haringey & Waltham (Essex Senior League)

Yes, for example from this season Brislington to Bodmin is over 140 miles.

Cheers for explaining. I'm a tad surprised though that small clubs should complain about something relatively minor like that. You'd have thought they would be more bothered about the travelling expenses!

All you have to do is win one game in the FA Cup and that's not an issue as the prize money more than covers travelling expenses, unless you decide to shack up in a hotel the night before.
My lot used to always be in with the Kent and Sussex teams in the early rounds but last season the FA sent us to Cheltenham in the Extra Preliminary Round which makes a nice change and it's a day out. Mind you, games in Sussex are generally a nice day out as well.

Bury town vs Cockfosters stands out for me. A nice trip and new ground. It would Makes a change in the early rounds not to play a team from the Essex senior league

Spennymoor Town v Blyth Spartans is a big one in the North East of England

The last time a Spennymoor team played Blyth, it was Spenny United's last game before they folded, Blyth won 3-2 at The Brewery Field that day
