League of Ireland 2014 Can't Post or Reply Privately

Premier Division fixtures now available:
http://extratime.ie/...s/future/100/2017/1/
First Division to follow later

Major talking point is the inclusion of a Shamrock Rovers side (B team, reserves, call them what you will) in the First Division:

I can't see Kilkenny used to be in the top flight, checked the top two divisions. Any ideas? I am sure they were top flight when we went (about 3 seasons ago)

I would laugh my head off if AFCW went down along with ColUwe and We**ham.

Kilkenny City packed up about 6 years ago.

Interesting to see Galway FC appear. Wiki suggests they're an amalgamation of Salthill Devon, Mervue United (neither of whom appear in the league's constitution for 2014), GUST (the old Galway United supporters' trust) and the Galway FA, and will be playing at United's old Terryland Park ground.

Yes, one of the articles I read described them as "a new Galway entity". I assume it was the replacement of Salthill & Mervue with one team that led to the vacancy filled by Shamrock's second team.

And its dud for me too!!

These Clubs reappearing should cause a lot of gnashing of teeth amongst the Purists, sadly it appears quite common place in Eire. One of my favourite ticks over there was Cobh Ramblers...also back which is nice to see.

The EA Sports Cup draw has been made and Mervue Utd are in it (with a bye in the first round). Also included are Avondale Utd, Crumlin Utd, Cockhill Celtic and the Mayo League.

Presumably Mervue will return to the Galway and District League unless they opt to try for Summer football in Mayo ? The other three clubs represent the three Senior Leagues - Avondale are from Munster, Crumlin from Leinster and Cockhill from Ulster.

Stop the B teams in the League proposal.

Why the Mayo League then? Is this a representative from Connaught?
Or am I just confused - is the Mayo League a club?

No, it is a league. While the other three provinces have a Senior League which represents the entire province, Connacht doesn't - just county leagues.

I can only imagine that there's some kind of playoff or rota to decide whether it's Galway or Mayo which gets to put a team into this competition (the strength in those two counties is well ahead of the other Connacht counties).

I can only ever remember seeing the Mayo League involved in this competition.

The Mayo League may be invited because, like the LOI, they are a Summer League and perhaps also because they have two excellent facilities in Castlebar (their own ground at Milebush and Castlebar Celtic) to stage games.

Stop the B teams in the League proposal.
