Music/football connections Can't Post or Reply Privately

A post by WestBerksPalace (thanks for the idea!) on the Musical Interlude thread got me thinking about particular songs that I associate with football matches, or tournaments, or eras. There are a few that spring to mind, not all for good reasons.

Nessun Dorma - Italia 90. Yeah, I'm sure I'm not the only one, but the BBC choice for its theme music for this tournament was inspired. Has there ever been a better one?

Robbie Williams - Let Me Entertain You. This always reminds me of our two glory years in the Prem. It seemed to be played before every home game, and really pumped up the atmosphere.

Jon & Vangelis - Horizon. Sadly, this will for ever remind me of 11th May 1985. It is a beautiful, haunting piece of music, a good 20 minutes long, and it's what I listened to as I crashed out on the bed after getting home that day (I'd just bought the album that week). The connection is permanent, and I find it difficult to listen to it nowadays. Still give it a spin on the anniversary sometimes, but it's tough.

Any other connections for anyone? Good/bad/whatever?

Euro 96- Football's coming home, Baddiel and Skinner. Sadly some people wouldn't let it lie, that song was for that tournament only, but others wanted to pro long it, which has spoiled the memory of that song for me.

My wife, who is not a Palace fan, but has been to a few games with me in the past, and still associates the music from the Long Good Friday (no longer played) and Glad All Over (still played, and enthusiastically clapped along to and also stolen by other clubs) with Selhurst Park and Palace home matches.

Glad All Over, by the Dave Clark Five (dubbed the 'Tottenham sound') has been played at Selhurst since the 1960s, and was revived big time during the run to the 1990 cup final, the players even making a record of it.

2019-20 - 32 games, last Loughborough Foxes v Nottm Forest Women 10/10, goals 101, avgpg 3.15, new grounds 9. Last - Loughborough University 10/10.
New Grounds in 2019 - 22. 2018 - 44. 2017 -44. Grounds in Total - 1215.
RL Grounds - 34 (Last - Craven Park, Barrow - 8/9/19), Speedway Tracks 50.

Celebration by Kool & the Gang was always played at Brentford after a victory when I was a regular there back in the day so that always takes me back.

Black Grape: England ire - the alternative euro 96 record.

Morrissey wrote a song about Roy Keane called Roys Keen which was a bloody awfull record that was lucky to break the top 30 but he also recorded one hell of a wonderful song about the 1958 Munich air disaster called the 1958 Munich air disaster but that
only made it as a B side.

The greatest football record though has to be New Orders Italia 90 classic World in Motion

I'm not a Liverpool fan, but this one made John Peel's Festive Fifty back in the day

Another one here. Coincidentally, Eat Y'self Fitter was one of the first two tracks of theirs I can remember hearing thanks to Sir John Peel. The other was The Man Whose Head Expanded. Both classics.

Got the impression it was always done as a wind up from someone at The BBC. One source states that it was Kevin Rowland's idea to put the Jocky Wilson picture up for a laugh

I've heard that. The reason I'm sceptical about it is that Kevin Rowland's never done anything 'for a laugh'.

Brilliant track.

"The man whose head expanded, was corrupted by Mr. Sociological memory
Was corrupted by Mr. Sociological memory man
Could not get a carrier bag for love nor money"

The song is allegedly a pop at Marc Riley, Radio 6 DJ and one time member of The Fall.

Daydreamer Believer by the Monkees.
(for those too young to remember this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uohP4gk0wU )

Tune sung by Sunderland fans to Peter Reid. This song always reminds me of Sunderland when I hear it on the radio and I am not a Sunderland fan.

Cheer up Peter Reid
  • oh i could fly without wings
  • on the back of Reidy's kings
  • at three o'clock im as happy as can be
  • cos the good times they are here
  • and the premiership is near
  • so watch out world as all of roker sings

Chrous
  • Cheer up Peter Reid
  • Oh what can it mean
  • To a sunderland supporter
  • To be top of the league
  • We once thought of you as a scouser dressed in blue
  • but now your red and white through and through
  • we had all dreamt of the day
  • when a saviour would come our way
  • and now we know our dreams are coming true

I would laugh my head off if AFCW went down along with ColUwe and We**ham.

This is a clip of Saint Etienne coming onstage to the track 'This Is Radio Etienne' before kicking into 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' (the first two tracks on the LP 'Fox Base Alpha')...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsN7BAtLs8I

Is the first track actually what it sounds like, which to me is the sampling of the intro to a football programme on French local radio?

Is that Sarah Cracknell singing, as she wasn't the vocalist on the original track?
Saint Etienne also have Tennis connections as they did a track called' Conchita Martinez'. A couple of years after the album was released Conchita won Wimbledon.
They should have done a track called 'Tim Henman' instead.Wink

No, she wasn't, but that clip was almost certainly from their concerts a few years back when they released a remix of Foxbase Alpha (called Foxbase Beta) so they performed all the songs from it but with the current line up including Sarah Cracknell.

Yes, it is an intro to coverage of a Saint Etienne game. Lyrics and translation here http://lyrics.wikia.com/...his_Is_Radio_Etienne

Limmie & Family Cooking 1973 "You can do magic"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HrG9-uFPnc
Theme song for Tony Currie at Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane.

Same era, Lynn Anderson "(I beg your pardon I never promised you a) Rose Garden"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-eclUz-RYI

Oh, and Annie's Song by John Denver. Slightly reworded.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZTx7WJMw3U

The oddest music was at Forest's ground, when I was at Uni there they used to play a very crackly copy of the theme music from the 1950/60s TV series "The Adventures of Robin Hood" starring Richard Greene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbyYr6L5xQM

Time for some of the Offical Non-League Matters band.

The Fall, Theme from Sparta F.C.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaxB5qRSq1I

Which was also used as the intro music for Football Focus, incredibly, the Hip priest himself was even invited on live TV to read out the vidi printer scores! I wish I had seen it.
