Merger Can't Post or Reply Privately

Not sure if this is the right forum for this so feel free to move it if not.

Maidstone United (Ladies) and Maidstone Town are to join forces and play their home matches at the Gallagher Stadium

Good luck to them, and all that, but....how is it a 'merger' when the Maidstone United name is kept, and you play at your new ground?

It's a takeover, surely?

Not that I'm fussed either way, this happens all the time in the womens' game.

Reminds me of a Spitting Image sketch when the Social Democratic Party and Liberal Party merged and they were deciding on the new name.

David Owen to David Steel - "From our name we'll take 'Social Democratic', from your name we'll take 'Party'.

Looks like Maidstone have done something similar.

A merger is a merger if both sides say so. I can't see any other way of defining it to be honest.

Erm, a takeover?

Bankers generally don't break the law, but they're called 'greedy'.

Large companies don't break the law, but are called 'tax dodgers'.

So i shall continue to call mergers like this a 'takeover' even though the powers that be say it isn't.

I don't follow you. My point was that a merger is a merger only because the clubs involved say it is - there don't appear to be any hard set rules beyond that.

And all I'm saying is that even if two clubs call something a merger, but it looks like a takeover, rather than a merger, then to all intents & purposes it IS am merger!

But if the final word goes to what clubs think then Champion Hill Stadium IS a new ground, & therefore a new tick, because that is what the Club says, and all of our fans think! ;-)

I think you mean it is a takeover, and I would agree. If it looks, sounds and acts like a duck, then it's probably a duck.

It's rather like the "merger" with South Park Rangers a few years ago. The teams all play under the name and colours of Maidstone United, with just the suffixes that South Park used to use to differentiate between teams.

Of course, being officially a merger means that the new team can take Maidstone Town's higher league place, rather than Maidstone United Ladies' lower one.

I think we are all saying the same thing. It's all about what the clubs concerned choose. In this case, as you say, it suited them to take the higher league place so they called it a merger. If it were more beneficial to call it a takeover they'd do that.
