English County Cups - Historical Results Can't Post or Reply Privately

Sometimes, you find individual club results on club history/archive sites... but are there any web sites or books providing results for county cups themselves?

I'm aware SoccerData has books on the Lancashire Cup and Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup, but are there others out there?

FCHD has county cups, but only back to 2005.

I'm thinking of the London Senior & Challenge Cups, Birmingham Senior Cup, etc.

English County Cups - Historical Results [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

The SFHA holds most of the principal Scottish county cup results from the 1870s onwards for a number of counties viz...

Aberdeenshire (most results up to WWII)
Ayrshire (most results up to 1962)
Dunbartonshire (90% complete)
Lanarkshire (most results up to 1962)
Edinburgh/East of Scotland (Shield and associated competitions up to WWII, and Shield post WWII)
Fife (most results up to date)
Linlithgowshire (90% complete)
Clackmannanshire (90% complete)
Stirlingshire (99% complete)
Forfarshire (90% complete)
Glasgow (complete)
Perthshire (most results up to WWII)
Haddingtonshire (1880s, it only lasted 4 years)

I'm currently putting a page together for Renfrewshire and have most of the results up to 1961 plus a few beyond.

It's been a hard slog, but worthwhile.

The Surrey Senior Cup finals are on Wiki. I can vouch for it's accuracy as I've been editing it as more details have been found by Ray Ward at Surrey FA and a couple of people from this forum who've dug out information in the past.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrey_Senior_Cup

I think Ray has all the results of the competition but I've no idea if they're on a database or not that he could pass on. You could always email him and ask.

I think most of the other County FAs also have Wikipedia pages for their Senior finals.
If anyone can fill in any gaps on the Surrey page please let me know. We're missing just a couple of venues but a lot of attendances.

For Somerset I have every Somerset Professional/Premier Cup Result for all rounds since 1928 apart from the date of 1 game.

For the Senior Cup from 1895 I think that I am 5 games short.

One day it may see the light of day!

By extracting them from programmes that have crossed my desk over the past 30 years, I reckon I have 95% of London Senior Cup and London Professional Cup results back to the mid 1950s.

Very interesting, do you have any plans to make them available in print or online?

I would like to complete the research back to the War and might publish it in book form then.

It's not top of my priorities at present - I've other football-related research / publishing projects on the go at the moment.

Bump.

Earlier in the year I also discovered a book on the Cheshire Senior Cup 1880-1915, to join the Lancashire and Sheffield & Hallamshire ones I knew about.

As someone mentioned Scotland (the SFHA website), there's also a pamphlet on the Renfrewshire Cup 1878-1929, published in the early 1990s.

I am slowly working my way through the Cheshire Senior Cup using a variety of sources, including programmes, etc. Does anyone know if the book mentioned above is still available anywhere? "Cheshire Senior Cup 1880-95" by Keith Clayton (I can't find one via the usual sources).

A couple of us on this board have done the Oxfordshire Senior Cup for the county F.A at separate times. I must have it somewhere on disk. Sadly the work seems to have gone to waste as they don't seem to publish it anymore and when they did they had a tendency to slightly alter / doctor the facts if they don't show the F.A. in a good light.

Bit of a long shot but was wondering if anyone can help with any info (scores & venues) for the following Derbyshire Senior Cup finals...

1944/45 ?? I've got a list in an old Ilson prog that has Buxton down as the winners, but surely football hadn't resumed yet due to WWII ??

1947/48 Derby Corinthians v Heanor Athletic @ ?
1949/50 South Normanton MW v Newhall United @ ?
1950/51 Shirebrook MW v Derby County 'A' @ ?
1951/52 Derby County 'A' v Qualcast Sports @ ?
1954/55 Shirebrook MW v New Mills @ ?
1961/62 Belper Town v Buxton @ ?
1971/72 Buxton v Matlock Town (2 legs)
1976/77 Matlock Town v New Mills (2 legs)

A search on Wiki doesn't mention 44/45 but lists 45/46 as success in the DSC. Could this possibly have been a typo in the programme???

Football was played at that time. The Surrey Senior Cup resumed in 1943-44 and London FA had a Senior Cup competiton throughout the war. I suppose it depends how many clubs were available to field teams at the time.

But John's typo theory is probably correct on this one.
Quote from http://manchopper.wordpress.com/...anchopper-in-buxton/:

"The club lifted their first Derbyshire Senior Cup (DSC) in 1938-39. This was to be the last silverware before the Second World War, their next coming immediately afterwards in 1945-46, a second DSC."

I've a list of all the Oxfordshire Senior Cup final results if anyone wants them - the OSC certainly continued through the WW2 years, but not WW1. As acmold says, the OFA don't seem terribly interested in them!

Yeah, could well be a typo. Trouble is, they get believed if you don't correct them. For years Buxton's honours list in the Non-League Club Directory included the following...

Derbyshire Senior Cup 38-39 44-45 45-46 56-57 59-60 71-72 (completely ignoring the wins of 80-81 85-86 86-87 I might add!)

...however, their website currently lists ten wins and doesn't mention 44-45.

http://www.pitchero.com/...ry-30614.html?page=4

As for Wiki, it doesn't mention 44/45 because I didn't put it on when I recently added the winners from '46 to '79, and corrected the winners for '81. Wink

Whilst on the subject of County Cups, does anyone know which County FA was the first to stage a County Cup?
On a similar line, there seems to be quite a difference in times of the formations of County FAs. From a quick look at the web it seems the first might have been Surrey (1877?), and the last Bedfordshire (1894?), but I'm none too sure about those dates. The individual County FAs now all seem to have a generic site that has no history at all on it.

Think Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA was the first to form, in 1867. Their first cup final... season 1876-77 The Wednesday 4-3 Heeley at Bramall Lane.

Surrey was 1877 but it didn't affiliate to the FA until 1882.
This is briefly mentioned on the county website.
http://www.surreyfa.com/...ontacts-and-about-us

You can see the formation dates of a number of county FAs on page 39 of this book - http://books.google.co.uk/...7%201882&f=false

Somerset was 1885 according to the book in the link.

The earliest few listed in the book:

Sheffield - 1867
Birmingham - 1875
Staffordshire and Surrey - 1877
Cheshire, Lancashire and Berks & Bucks - 1878
Durham & Northumberland (one entity until 1883) - 1879

Think Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA was the first to form, in 1867. Their first cup final... season 1876-77 The Wednesday 4-3 Heeley at Bramall Lane.

The Birmingham Senior Cup also started in 1876-77.

As they were the only two county FAs in existence in 1876 I think that's the answer for the first county cup competition(s).
