More than 2 miles from Chatham Railway station, if you drive. Not sure about the crow flying distance.

Re: [Oxford Stone] Pub Questions #47 [In reply to] Can't Post or

You win. It is the Flying Saucer in Hempstead, near Gillingham.

Was stopping down there at the house of some friends from uni, I do a lot of Heritage Pubs, but there aren't any round there, so we chose there for a meal and a few pints. None of my mates knew why it was called the Flying Saucer and assumed it was down to the fact some drunk had stumbled out and claimed to have seen one, but no, the real reason for its naming is classic.

The pub was called the Travelers or something, and was owned by a middle-aged couple. The wife would sweat it in the kitchen, run the bar, do the books, the lot. The landlord would sit with the regulars, drinking all the profits. One day the landlord shouted into the kitchen for his wife to come out and serve while he was sat on his arse doing nothing, she called for him to serve, he replied I'm busy talking to the lads. She snapped. Came rushing out the kitchen hurling saucers one by one at him, chasing him down the road still throwing them at him with all the locals looking on in amazement. The pub was first nicknamed the Flying Saucer days after, and renamed after a refurb by John Baras. Or so I am told.

Hope you enjoyed that game. I'll stop by soon. Cheers.
