Rude Southerners Can't Post or Reply Privately

It always happens when I do down South, so I should be used to it I suppose.
Did a nice 8 miler around Clapham and Wandsworth Commons early this morning. Must have seen 3 dozen or so others runners out doing their bit....not one single one replied I said 'morning'. Ignorant buggers.

Luckily I'm back in sunny Yorkshire, and when I get out for my long Sunday run tomorrow I know that virtualy everyone I see will speak (except maybe the Southern tourists).

Re: [DonQuixote] Rude Southerners [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I was in the Dun Cow in what I think is classified as New York near North Shields. Having a good old drink but my glasses had broken so I was literally blind drunk. Got chatting to this lass who took exception to my southern accent (from a distance she looked alright but the lack of glasses played their part).
After a bit of verbal self defence saying it doesn't matter where you're from etc. and people in my neck of the woods accept people from all over the world without questioning their accents she asked why I was actually there. 'For my uncle's funeral' I replied. 'Who's your uncle?'. 'Jimmy Kirkwood'. 'Wor Jimmy's your uncle?' All of a sudden she was friendly when she realised my family are from that area. Speaking to her on more amicable terms it turns out she was from Kent and had only moved to the north east 15 years earlier. I didn't realise cos she had such a broad Geordie accent. This immediately put me on the offensive. 'Kent? That's even furthur south than where I'm from. How can you have a go at my accent when you're from Kent?'

Rude southern bastards!

Probably more to do with Clapham Common and the surrounding area than anything else, plenty of 'good mornings' exchanged here in Kent.

When I moved to Guernsey many moons ago, I was totally
taken aback when strangers walked past and said good morning (before midday of course).

Having been brought up in the Badlands of east London/Essex,
this gesture would normally be accompanied by a smack in the mouth...

8 miles over Bronte country today. Three dozen or so hardy souls encountered (mostly walkers). Not one failed to acknowledge my greetings, with many many cheery and well meaning comments. I love Yorkshire :)

Me, in Yorkshire??? I'd rather spend a week in Somalia.

One thing that did make me smile that came from there, was
Uncle Mort, North Country tales?

Peter Tiniswood springs to mind as does Carter his nephew?

May have it all wrong but can remember listening to the tapes a few years past and chuckling quite a lot.

I'm sure you will put me right....

Rob might not, but I will. Peter Tinniswood was from Sale, not Yorkshire. I remember there was a programme about his life and he reminisced about the Odeon cinema as a child, when my family worked out my mother was working as an usherette there around the same time.

I must agree Southerners are on the whole less welcoming shall we say. But as the local Caucasian male is in the minority in London, and the risk of being glassed at an all time high, I tend to keep myself to myself south of the Watford Gap.

I am quite happy to respond to (nearly) anyone saying hi north of aforementioned gap.

Ah yes...I remember it now...Robin Bailey, no? (just Googled that).

I loved the bit when they (his nephew) were in a pub and
the old boy says: "The last time I was in here, somebody died."

Not particularly funny, but extremely witty if you add the accent to the scenario.
I think the pub burned down in that
episode.

When you say South you really mean London, I would say there is a difference, for one thing most of those people probably don't speak English or if they do aren't originally from here and therefore not versed in the manners and customs we have.
Hence the general decline in respect for other people these days. Frown

'most' people in London don't speak English - ouch !

There's a standing joke up here that any obstreperous groundhoppers that are encountered are nearly always Southern-based, (and they do speak English if they hail from Larndon Tongue) The famous case at Steeton a year or so again perhaps the best known. Wink

Baise moi puta...what a load of cojones....it's irascible Northerners
on the tube that give me the hump.

Queue for ten minutes then whinge and moan coz the
cheapest fare for one stop, is equivillant to eight pints
of Bob's Owd Sheepdip, in t' pub on moors...

..and don't get me started on those who stand on the left
of the escalators..they're usually
northerners or Japanese but the latter always veer
to the right when asked, along with a customary bow and a scrape.

Our kid on t'other hand will stand there holding his ground, trying to claim his spot...

Gor blimey, this is London geezer, learn the feckin' rules before you come.

Oh dear, this is very difficult to put across without causing offence. Frown
I am sure every country of origin has a good proportion of caring people who make every effort if living in London. My neighbour is Bulgarian and a very kind and helpful chap. Its just that some nationalities round here seem to have a higher percentage of rude people than others, which obviously comes from their culture. Thats how it is unfortunately.
PS. Denmark is the last one that springs to mind in this case! Wink
