Whitby.

Mentions for Keswick, Bridgnorth, St Ives (Cornwall), and - local to when I used to work in North Leigh: Witney. Imperfections include being David Cameron's constituency, but it's unique in Oxon and beyond in having as many pubs as a century ago!

There certainly is something about 'Dirtford' but I'm not sure how to describe itWink

I've not been there for years but I seem to recall Knaresborough being very nice.

Generally any town not on the mainstream tourist trail.

Olney-Small market town with the interesting William Cowper Museum

Burnham-on-Crouch- Unbelievably a decent place considering it is in Essex.Mangapps Railway museum is well worth a visit. Some nice pubs to while away a few hours overlooking the River Crouch.

Hastings- The Old Town is terrific, not to mention the Fisherman's Huts by Rock-a-Nore.A visit is not complete without a go on one of the 3 mini golf courses.

Lancaster-Surprisingly a fascinating place although technically a city.Shame about the awful traffic conditions it suffers from.

Lichfield-Plenty on offer for all 'culture vultures'.The cathedral, birthplace of Samuel Johnson, the fine Georgian architecture.By virtue of the Cathedral it is also classified as a city

Shildon-Just it's gritty working class environment. Also has an excellent railway museum.Friendly people & a fantastic stand at the football ground

Matches Attended 2019 -20 : 13
New Grounds 2019-20: 12

Re: [Fleetfan] Your favourite English Town? [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Some of you might remember Alec Clifton-Taylor's three series of programmes on English towns, broadcast by the BBC in 1978, 1981 and 1984.

Series 1 Six English Towns
Chichester, Tewkesbury, Richmond, Stamford, Totnes, Ludlow

Series 2 Six More English Towns
Warwick, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Saffron Walden, Lewes, Bradford on Avon, Beverley

Series 3 Another Six English Towns
Cirencester, Whitby, Bury St Edmonds, Devizes, Sandwich, Durham

They'd never get away with it now. Who would commission a series in which an educated 'old school' white middle-class man in his 70s would be allowed to write his own script, employing sentences of more than ten words, and talk on and off camera without any visual aids, dramatic reconstructions or intrusive background music? The programmes' format was simple: point the camera at a street or a building, describe it and then follow this with a silent pause during which you the viewer could mentally digest the narration while appreciating the particular aspect of the feature just described. Most modern viewers would think there was something wrong with the sound track.

And all of this in 30 minutes. Today's 'factual' programmes drag on for 50 or 60 minutes but with barely 30 of real content. Andrew Marr's laughable BBC1 history of the world is a case in point.

[PS I'm surprised Olney wasn't featured in any of ACT's programmes.]
