Stockholm Can't Post or Reply Privately

Being the wonderful boyfriend I am I am taking the missus to Stockholm for a surprise birthday present over the weekend of 21-23 September.

I wondered if any of you know Stockholm and can give any advice, especially about bars, restaurants and maybe the music scene, beyond what I've found online.

We're staying in Södermalm, not far west from Slussen on Lake Mälaren and I understand Söder is the place to be but I'd love to pin point a few specific targets, bar-wise.

Thanks for any help in advance!

(happy - and able - to advise on most European countries based on my own travels)

Theres a Belgian Beer place right near the station (Belgobaren). Come out of main station entrance and keeping the Station on your left walk away from the bridge to the harbour and you can see it down a side street on your right.

Very close to this, on the left, theres a Bishops Arms. You will pass this just before you see the street with Belgobaren in it. Do not be put off by the fact that it looks like a fake English pub. It is ! But its not that fake. It does Real Ale and has a wide range of proper Swedish beers of different types.

Gamla Stan is good for restaurants on an evening, but I didn't find any bars of the standard of these. Be warned, even Indian and Chinese restaurants don't stay open very late in Stockholm and you need to be in your seats by 2100 in my experience. If you go for a session hoping for a meal later (probably unlikely with your girlfriend buy hey I don't know!) like we did you could end up eating dust (sawdust being the main ingredient in the local Burger chains offerrings, at least in my opinion)....

Just goes to show how people's tastes differ ! In my view, Bishops are like Wetherspoons - OK out in the sticks where there is limited choice, but to be avoided in places like Stockholm where there is a wide choice of far superior (in my opinion) more individual bars.

If you start getting up front and personal with
the locals, does one not develop a syndrome, or
is that Stockport?

They are a bit like Wetherspoons, but i found decent bars hard to come by. Had a look on a website before i left, walked around a fair bit I never found anywhere better. Plus its near the station and my holiday was based on trains. Unfortunately I was let down by the beer gen I had for Sweden, to the point that BOTH brewpubs I had found listed for Gothenburg had gone, one very recently, so I wasn't going to have the same experience in Stockholm.

(edit) The monks Cafe looks interesting however...will have to remember that for next summer!

I'd love to take time out and travel to Europe's capitals.
There must be a Rail Card that covers most of the major
places - first class of course - but sounds like a whizz and
a great way to pass two/three months.

If you enjoy jazz and/or contemporary music, you might want to check out "Fasching", Kungsgatan 63 (near Centralstation). Mary's Mine is appearing there on the Friday night. Details are on the club's website which is available in English as well as Swedish. There is also a restaurant, although I haven't eaten there. Music was great though!

I posted this on here after my visit in 2010
Saturday I was in the Flying Horse before the game for Gotland Brewery beers (thanks to oftenscore6 of this forum for the recommendation) then the Glenfiddich Warehouse in the evening. Sunday was Akkurat in the evening, then Monday the Monks Cafe for their home brew stuff during the 'Afterwork' promotion period (39 Kr for half litre 1400-1700)

Of course, things may be very different two years on !

This summer I did visit the Bishops Arms in Sundsvall, Gävle, Örebro & Linköping. The one in Örebro was a cut above the rest.

Akkurat has had a couple of mentions, but nearby is also Oliver Twist at Repslagargaten 6, www.olivertwist.se both bars had great beer lists and used handpump dispense. Both have good value lunches.Enjoyed the Swedish micro beers from Nynashamn at both establishment. Slussen is the transport hub for both these. Can't decide which of the two liked best, will have to go back and re-compare.

Last new Belgian beer: Lupulus (formerly Trois Fourquets) Triple 8.5% bc (808)
