Western League advice	Can't Post or Reply Privately

I will be taking in my first game in the Western League on August 4th and was looking for advice as to which ground people would recommend out of the following three:

Wells City FC
Bishop Sutton FC
Street FC

All are about the same distance from our hotel so any assistance would be great fully received.

My preference would probably be in the order that you put them.

Wells - fine old wooden stand, ground situated in a large sporting complex.

Bishop Sutton - Tidy ground nice clubhouse with a small stand. Seem to recall a lot of midge type biters for early/late season games (large reservoir nearby). Awkward by public transport which for some bizarre reason makes me feel that it is a better tick (!).

Street - nice enough ground, cover on both sides (if I remember rightly) but bottom of the 3 for me as I didn't find them very friendly and it was one of those after work visits when I just couldn't wait to get back home. This was the best of the 3 for getting some grub though.

Im in the area Mr G Dog, Tuesday 7th (lots of options), Wednesday 8th (Hallen) Friday (if pass is stamped Wooten Bassett) and Saturday 11th Wells in the FAC

I'm looking at doing Wells on the 4th and Keynsham on the 7th - getting 2 grounds I've not been to in that league before the SWP starts on Friday 10th.

Another option is Cheddar v Sherborne on Aug 4, Cheddar's first ever Western League game and a chance to do the ground as they are moving in a year or so.

Wells City is a very old ground which has been buffed up in recent times as the club have had a resurgence as is very near the city centre, cathedral, etc.

Bishop Sutton is right next to a pub in the village and is rustic without being overly sexy.

Street is a bastard to find unless you live nearby, as I do, but there is plenty of cover and a decent clubhouse plus a big shopping area (Clarke's Village) if you have a significant other to placate.

Not when I drove there in December ... well sign-posted from the main road. I preferred it to Wells' ground as there is cover on both sides and more like a football ground than Wells City which is part of a sportsground. Haven't done Bishop Sutton yet, as it will need to be a rare Saturday when I have a car!

I'd leave Wells until we are having monsoon conditions. They have probably the best draining pitch in the South and West of England! I visited on a foul day couple of seasons ago, it rained cats and dogs all morning, throughout the game, and all the way home, many roads down that way flooded.

Save it for a very wet day, it will be one of a handful ON in those conditions. Shame to waste it in the Summer! Wink

Bishop Sutton if its a nice day. Its hard to find and you wont get to it by public transport but its in a lovely area with some good views. Not good in bad weather though.

Street is ok from what i recall best facilities of the three. which is just as well as it seemed to be halfway to Yeovil rather than in the town. Would be quite a hike if leaving the wife at the Clarks Vilage with the car.

Wells has a nice stand but i didnt rate anything else about it.

Surely some mistake? It's a piece of cake, you can see it from the road throught the village?

... I assumed he meant the village itself NOT the ground - is certainly what us 'urbanites' would term 'in the sticks'.

Can't remember much about Bps Sutton other than it was a bit swampy = due to the lake/reservoir at the bottom end - adequate bar.

Wells was a bit of a trek to the Bar/Pavilion but very friendly officials - not great for parking if its a sizeable gathering though - unless they've let you onto the other parts of the Sports area. Did go last match of a season when Larkhall (Champs that season I think) were the visitors - so big crowd for them.

Street was the most recent visit and agree food was good - nice enclosed 'old style' NL ground - can't recall having too much trouble finding the ground but it was a bit tucked away and a fair distance from the M5. OK if you leave the A39 at the right bit.

My own view point.

Street - best ground of the 3 but was an absolute bugger to find the entrance to in the middle of a housing estate.

Wells - Very easy to find on the edge of the City centre. Large old stand. Archery practice was going on behind one of the goals when I went.

Bishops Sutton - Again relatively easy to find, not much there but friendly locals. (and gnats, midgets mosquitos etc!)

Anyone with any queries or need any help planning a trip to Fareham Town FC - give me a bell.

Any pre 1979-80 Fareham Town programmes wanted plus any further memorabilia/press etc.

Thanks for all the advice! For info, I ended up at Street which was indeed a bugger to find, especially following my Sat Nav that took me to the wrong side of the ground marooned in a Cul de sac.

The ground was tidy and the Pies were excellent.

The game was ok with Street clearly the better team. A sedate but interesting start to the new season!
