Ernie Machin (1944-2012) Coventry City, Plymouth Argyle and Brighton and Hove Albion.

Died at the weekend. Jimmy Hill went on record as saying that Ernie was his greatest signing and for those of us around and Sky Blues fans at the time that is a statement of great magnitude and gives you some idea of what a magnificent player he was. He was signed from Nelson for £200 after the Sky Blues scout in that part of the world recommended him to the Bearded Wonder and went on to play for us as a driving inside forward for 10 years. A recurrent knee injury and a bad car crash led to him being released by Gordon Milne and Joe Mercer and moving to Plymouth in 1972 for 2 seasons where he made such an impression that he was voted into their team of the century! He finished off his career at Brighton before a short and unsuccessful spell as the Sky Blues youth team coach. After that he worked in local industry. Sadly in recent years he had been dogged by ill health and when he attended the annual Legends Day(which he was at in April) he was in a wheelchair and unrecognisable from his former self. This very sad news severs another link with the greatest period in our history. If only we had someone of his quality in our midfield now. RIP One of our greatest ever players.

Having watched him regularly for Plymouth during his time there I can understand why he is in their all time team
