Portsmouth to the wall Can't Post or Reply Privately

Portsmouth look like they may finally be liquidated after several previous opportunities to go to the wall.

I'm most interested in what would happen to their vacant spot if they folded so far up the pyramid, especially so close to the start of the season. Can't remember the last team to fold at Tier 3 or higher?

If they fold too close to the start of the season for reprieves, what would the situation be for replacing them in the league? Would three potentially go up from the conference, or would fewer teams be relegated?

I very much doubt there'd be any reprieves at this late stage - league cup starts in 2 and a half weeks time.

In terms of replacing them next summer - it would be less clubs relegated rather than more promoted - just like it has been at non-league level.

I read somewhere that L1 would carry on with 23 teams as it's too late in the game.

A shame for the supporters. Do hope a phoenix club can come out of the ashes.

The FA Cup was just a blip, I think you'll find in a longer downhill drop.
I am sure if the worst happens, League-1 would play with 23 teams.
For comments on the last similar occurence, and what happened, can we call in the Maidstone supporters?

It wasn't the same with Aldershot. They left the league part way through the season. So did Maidstone, though they didn't play any of their matches. They resigned on 17th August 1992, having failed to fulfil their first fixture away to Scunthorpe on 15th August (Wikipedia).

Well, there is an outfit north of Hadrian's Wall that's looking for a league to play in. Big stadium, lots of fans....but the League'd have to keep a close eye on their players contracts.... both sets of them.Shocked

There does seem to an element of that. they're trying to get the eight remaining senior players off the books or get them to take big pay cut, it's like Bristol City 30 years ago.

If Pompey had moved a bit quicker, they might have been able to get an AFC Pompey up and running in L2 this season, probably with the same points deduction as they have now. But if they do sit out a whole year, it's stepping into unchartered territory.

As has been said far too late for a phoenix club to play in the coming season.
Really can't see them restarting in the Football league next season either.
So it would be non league football for them and start at the discretion of the Leagues committee.
The supporters club spokesman not even sure that they could use Fratton park.

Why AFC Portsmouth, its getting a little old now. AFC everywhere. Theres tons of names out there that would make great second names. why stick to tradional, look at 2 of the most succesful clubs in english history, Nottingham FOREST and Sheffield WEDNESDAY. So why not something different, and i really do think that one of these clubs should use the name PHOENIX as a new club rising from the ashes of the old one. Portsmouth Phoenix, kind of has a good ring to it dont you think.

Is there the slightest chance a 'new' Pompey would be accepted into the system at all? I can't imagine they'd bother below step 5.

I'm amazed a breakaway, supporters owned club hasn't already formed. There's no reason such an entity - Portsmouth United perhaps - couldn't start off in the Wessex League with crowds of 1-2000.

If this fiasco has shown one thing, it's that single benefactor models are ripe for disaster. Better to have your own club operating at a sustainable level, than risk it being thrown to the vagaries of asset stripping snd speculation.

With only 15 teams in its Division One - the Wessex League would welcome them with open arms. It should be Division One though - leapfrogging the 15 teams in that division and being placed in the Premier would just be completely wrong!

What would choices would a Newco Pompey have reagarding a ground, I guess Fratton Park would be out of the question, I dont know a great deal about Football on the South Coast, so who would be the better to share with,, my understanding says Havant and Waterlooville, but is there anywhere else in Portsmouth to play on, does the Navy have a ground in Pompey, what about Gosport or at a push mewpprt iow or eastleigjh

Several Step 5 grounds within their locality but on here in the past its been suggested that a fans club could use Fratton if the Club went bust.
