6.45pm
Shetland Premier League
Ness United 2 Delting 0 (att 15)
Free admission, no prog

This was without doubt the coldest I've ever been while watching a football match in July. That was thanks to a very strong wind blowing in from the north, and straight across the Boddam Sports Field pitch.

It could have been worse though. After a brief period of bright sunshine, fog descended on Shetland by late afternoon. Driving from Lerwick I had my doubts whether the game would be on, but thankfully the venue was misty rather than foggy.

Given the conditions, which made playing as well as watching a challenge, it was difficult to judge the standard of my first experience of Shetland football.

The teams worked hard, but clear chances were few and far between. Ness looked the better team though, scoring after three minutes, and adding a second close to the end. In between they struck the frame of the goal and were denied by the Delting keeper.

The visitors though they'd scored with about 12 minutes to go, but they'd fouled the Ness keeper when bundling the ball over the line.

The pitch at Boddam, to the south of Shetland's Mainland, is a basic village playing field, although there is some cover, and some park bench seating, in front of the pavilion. Chances are the setting is scenic, but I shall have to wait until I drive back past it on a fog-free day to find out.

Friendly
SV Darmstadt 0-2 FSV Frankfurt

Whilst I appreciate and understand those who are not fans of friendlies all I can say is I thoroughly enjoyed this. The beer flowed, the sun shone and all from the massive terrace that swept across three sides.

Friendly
Undy Athletic 3 Newport County 1
Admission £5 Programme (32 pages) £1 Attendance approx. 300

With three hundred or so Newport County fans guaranteeing Undy their biggest gate (and bar takings) of the season, this pre-season friendly was never likely to be cancelled despite the standing surface water on the pitch and the continuous steady rain that fell throughout the game. Though the resultant conditions were farcical at times, they couldn't be blamed by the away side for their comprehensive defeat at the hands of last season's Welsh League third division champions. Undy's settled side more than matched the collection of new players and trialists that last season's Trophy finalists fielded.
Undy's Causeway ground which lies adjacent to, parallel with, but hidden from, the main rail line between Newport and Paddington, now has a small Welsh League required Arena style section of cover on the halfway line - very much appreciated in conditions like these. The clubhouse and dressing room block are behind the one goal, where there is more than enough car parking for a Welsh League game. There is virtually no hardstanding otherwise.
The colourful programme contained about 25 pages of adverts, but was welcome nonetheless.

ELGIN CITY 3, COWDENBEATH 3 at Borough Briggs.

Admission - £8. No programme. Crowd - 293.

Despite starting the game well Cowden found themselves 3-0 down at half time! Obviously a sterm team talk took place at half time and the game ended 3-3 with Cowden also hitting the post 3 times.

Fisher FC 4 AFC Croydon Athletic 1 Bacon's College Rotherhithe London SE16 Admission £3 (Included the programme)

Played on a 3G pitch in a fairly new looking school behind the old home of Fisher Athletic, Surrey Docks Stadium. Saw alot of familiar faces and was a good game to start the new season with. The best team won.
