I read on the Brentford website two days ago that their
new ground will be ready for the start of season 2016/2017

Old news now, but Brentford have bought 7.6 acres of land in Lionel Road, which I think is slightly closer to Kew Bridge Railway station but could actually be nearer the 'Tube' line - it may well be land once owned by Network Rail - and they will be putting in a planning application to Hounslow Council for a 15,000 all-seater stadium to be ready by 2016/17. I'm sure one of the more revered and knowledgeable Bees fans on this forum can clarify or confirm matters.

I love Griffin Park and it'll be a huge wrench to leave the place but, in all honesty, there's nowhere to park and (gritted teeth here) no real chance of exploiting the ground for corporate hospitality. On the other hand, quite a few clubs have seen gates rise considerably since moving to new grounds, and Brentford really need or deserve more than the 5,000 or so average gate they manage in a very densely populated area peppered with clubs two divisions higher at present.

Maybe the club could keep tradition and put a bar in each corner of the new stadium! Mind you, I understand next season's shirts will be plain white on the back (sacrilege) so I'm not expecting miracles.

I believe the shirt design has been forced on them by new league rules insisting that numbers / names on the backs of shirts should actually be legible, which is something that stripes don't help. As a spectator I applaud this initiative which is long overdue.

Well things certainly have moved rather quickly at Griffin Park in the last few months, as only a few months ago this project seemed a lot further away due to the current economic downturn.

Bees United (The Supporters Trust) until very recently held the controlling interest in the club, a couple of years ago they teamed up with Matthew Benham a Bees fan with it seems some deep pockets, Matthew Benham took over a number of loans that the club had with various organisations and at the same time agreed to put into the club an agreed amount for the next 4 or 5 years including money to help develop the club acadamey so the club could produce players for the first team and eventually sell them on. At the end of the agreement Bees United either paid back the money or Matthew Benham took controlling interest of the club. Earlier this season Matthew Benham stated that he had the money to buy Lionel Road but was not prepared to pay the current price as he felt it was overpriced. Somewhere along the line either the price has become acceptable or another party has possibly tried to purchase the site, as a result Bees United held an SGM in June where it was agreed to hand over the controlling interest in the club to Matthew Benham with the safeguard that Griffin Park could not be sold until the club had a new ground built. 2 weeks after this event the club buys Lionel Road.

It will be a wrench to leave Griffin Park but the club desparately needs a new ground to develop and hopefully sustain itself. The land is behind the London Bound platform at Kew Bridge station but dont expect to find a pub on each corner ! Basically the triangular shape of the land is bordered by railway lines on each side. Parking will not be any easier at the ground and i suspect most people who drive will have to park near the current ground unless the club come up with some better plans.

If the Football League is that bothered about names & numbers being legible it would help if they didn't adopt a standard numbering and lettering that is difficult to read even on a plain background, i.e. two tone with shadow effect, logos superimposed on top of numbers, a mixture of upper and lower case lettering. Until about thirty years ago all teams used clear, bold numbers. Why anyone felt the need to change that is beyond me. Bring those back and just use a small plain patch for them if necessary. The modern trend for shirts to be striped/hooped/halved/quartered on the front but plain on the reverse is one of my personal pet hates.

I agree about the two-tone shirt effect. I hate that as well. Some teams recently dallied with a plain horizontal band across the shoulders where the name went and I can't see anything wrong with that practice, and getting rid of the middle back stripe, or adding a panel in the middle of the shirt in a different colour to the rest, should suffice for number positioning. My other pet hate is all black kits, should be for officials only in my nostalgic view, and Brentford have one of those next season - in fact, the board originally decided to change the home shorts and socks to white as well in order to register the all black away kit!
