how many of you break down tickets to save what can be a considerable amount of money?i know booking advance tickets (up to 12 weeks before departure)can be good but ive been caught out a couple of times by the weather and they wont refund money on them
on saturday i bought tickets from leicester to new st then new st to gobowen for the TNS game both costing £11.80 and saved myself a tenner in the process
heres a crazy thing, its £12.70 off peak day return from new st to shrewsbury but only £11.80 for the same ticket to gobowen and the only valid route to gobowen takes you through shrewsbury anyway!!
if you are going to chester for the day from new st then buy a day return to wrexham, its a similar story tho there is two different ways to chester so the fare is understandable.

I always try to do it if I travel by train. Had this before but if I went to South Wales it would be a silly price but if I go Oxford - Swindon then Swindon - South Wales it saves £'s.

At the end of the football season when Oxford played at Port Vale and 100's went by train the staff at Oxford Station were actually on the ball and had a seperate seller for tickets to Stoke. He was actually issuing everyone six tickets, Oxford - Banbury, Banbury - Birmingham, Birmingham - Stoke as it was saving £'s on the actual fair. In fact it worked out cheaper than advanced fairs or group 4, or whatever they are called.

The trouble is that 90% of the train-travelling public wouldn't have
a clue how to circumnavigate the morass that is involved in buying
a train ticket...and how the TOCs milk it for all it's worth.

If one is clued up and has the wherewithal to go through all the options
with a fine toothed comb, then pounds can be saved but most can't be
arsed and just pay up.

I've been looking at train fares more & more as the petrol prices get stupid. Some of the fares are just plain daft, though. Wrexham to Newport & back is a couple of quid cheaper than Wrexham to Hereford & back, despite the Newport train going through Hereford & another 40-odd miles further Crazy

I once travelled one way from Waterloo to Farnborough (I was getting a lift back home) and upon asking for a Single I was presented with a Cheap Day Return, because it was cheaper than a Single. Even to this day a Cheap Day Return from Dumfries to Carlisle is only pennies more than a Single. And another point how come a Manchester>London return used to be cheaper than a London>Manchester return (don't know if it still is). This was back in 1989>1991 when some fellow apprentices used to go home to Manchester every other weekend and having a ticket that originated up north was significantly cheaper than one originating in London.

Northwood, Threave Rovers, Arsenal, Watford, Rochdale, Rangers (the real ones, NOT qpr), queen of the south and a few others.

Using a Nottingham-Manchester super off peak day return has always saved me money when going to the North West on Saturdays. £13.65 with a railcard is excellent value for money, and is the same price if you do Nottingham to one of the nearby Manchester-area stations too.

Used to be the same at Oxford, returns to a number of places were far dearer than the other way round. Not checked in recent times as most fares from Oxford are now so expensive travelling by train is out of the question. It's a supply and demand thing, most trains are packed at the high prices and the station is a bottleneck on the network and can't really cater for any more services.

The main mistake people make is not buying in advance. Even buying up to 48 hours in advance can save fortunes.

Savings are less on rural routes, and the penalty less for POTD too. On Inter City routes and the Dross Country services you are chucking money away not buying in advance.

Also a lot of staffed stations can provide very good advice on the cheapest ticketing options.

There are also a lot of badly publicised Rover tickets.

There are Devon and Cornwall Rovers, including buses, for something like £10, and Southern do an online only all stations for roughly the same.

Sadly from Oxford these days very few if any reductions even if booked a long way in advance.

The types of railcard you can use for that are 16-25 (I'm 26, but in the last year of a 3-year one bought before my 24th birthday!), Senior (over 60) and Family & Friends (at least 1 adult, 1 child).

No need for that. It would have been enough for you to say that there is no midland/eastern equivalent of the NSE railcard (which extends to King's Lynn and Huntingdon).

Not just Leicester station. It's a problem with many booking staff. Not that I'm blaming them. There are so many different tickets I'm not surprised they can't keep up.

probably being abit unfair on them,as you say there are so many different tickets, but they dont like printing off 10 or 12 tickets for what is in effect one journey that i am making but as i said earlier its about saving money and we havnt all got the staff discount passes

Longer serving staff will often give you better advice than you would ever be able to work out for yourself. Unfortunately a lot of TOCs are getting rid of Station staff, and of course the older more experienced ones, that are all Union members, are the ones that usually go, to be replaced by kids fresh out of travel agencies with no Railway knowledge, which is where the problems start....
