Oldham Boro Can't Post or Reply Privately

Leaving the Whitebank Stadium and groundsharing with Atherton Collieries next season, citing an "FA directive that football clubs sharing a ground with a club of another sport must have priority in respect of fixture". Certainly an interesting one considering the number of groundshares in existence, and particularly that such a directive extends as far down the leagues?

Can anyone find evidence of the directive? I can't find it on ground grading

It's rule 2.3 of the standardised rules for leagues in the NLS.

"A Club may share its ground (subject to the provisions of Rule 4.12) with another club (including a club engaged in another sport) providing, in the case of any football club, the club playing in the most senior competition has priority of fixtures and, in the case of any other club, providing the Club has priority of fixtures."

Since presumably Oldham RL mostly play on Sundays and the football club on Saturdays where's the problem?

Last new ground (575): Bentley Youth - Red Star Alma v Malvern Rangers 6/5/13
Last game: Darlaston v Wolves Sporting 7/5/13
Last new RL ground (67): Butts Park Arena - Coventry v St Albans 30/6/12
Last RL game: Huddersfield v Warrington 5/4/13

I'd assume the rugby club are saying the football club can't play on the Saturday before their own fixtures.

Would seem that way. Think there were a couple of games early in the RL season that were postponed because there had been a football game the previous day that had taken place in a mudbath and meant that the pitch was unfit for the rugby because of the amount of ruts/divots etc.

Where does this leave higher profile clubs like Newport County & Stourbridge who share with egg chasing & Cricket?

There must be scores of others who share with Cricket & have to fit around each other

Northamptonshire CCC still unbeaten this season

Re: [Steelback] Oldham Boro [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

As far as Stourbridge are concerned my guess would be that any arrangement which pre-dates these rules (ours goes back to 1888!) can continue.

We have tenure of Amblecote from 1st September to 30th April each season. Any home games in August or May (including potentially play-off matches) either have to be played elsewhere (Halesowen and Redditch have been used in recent seasons) or require us to come to some deal with the cricket club to allow us to use the ground - last season, for instance, we played Leamington at Amblecote on a Tuesday night in August. Saturdays, and Sundays for that matter, are a total no-go for obvious reasons. Friday nights have been suggested but that needs the agreement of all parties, most notably the visiting team(s), and I doubt we'd get it. Why should they?

Incidentally, who (theoretically, maybe) has first call at Wigan or Huddersfield, out of interest?

I'm pretty certain it's the football club in each case. A few years back Wigan Warriors played a cup tie at (I think) Widnes because there was a Wigan Athletic match the same weekend, and last year Huddersfield Giants played three early summer league matches at Halifax due to pitch renovation work.

This appears to be a cross sport hobby horse thing at the moment, London Welsh want to play at the Kassam Stadium but must have first option on the ground while Oxford United must also have first option on the ground. As London Welsh stated in their case a number of other Rugby clubs of both codes share at Football League and Premier League grounds and in those situations both club can't both have first options.

Clearly in the case of Oxford, the football club has precedence. It is their ground and their "Manor", why should the Football authorities now to the RFU in this? Neither should Football take precedence if say Brentford or Hayes and Yeading shared at The Stoop!

Now don`t you start spreading Rumours Chienmort Wink - Ironically when Brentfords new ground at Lionel Road was still in the pipeline, London Welsh were mooted as possible partners in sharing the stadium Angelic

I believe the arrangement at Hull is that each team has priority at the end of their season (i.e. Hull City Feb-May, Hull FC Aug-Oct).

That seems the fairest most workable solution. I don't understand why the authorities have to get so worked up about this ruling.

Unlikely then that St Helens Town ever get to play at the new rugby ground that they were a partner in - they didn't have first call at the old ground, with their fixtures were rerranged once the Super League fixtures came out.

At Huddersfield, they do sometimes play on consecutive days, Sunday being the Giants usual home day.

Being the North West Counties League, one can never be sure, but does everyone feel that Oldham are leaving the ground for the reasons stated, or is this an attempt to push through either a reduction in rent, or a new ground (at local council expense).

I suspect though that this is just another step in the decline of the Oldham club.

I think they'd rather play in the town than over at Atherton, its not exactly next door.

However, when I went there last season it was one of the bumpiest playing surfaces I have ever come across (a few days sun after a rugby match). Seems the rugby bods did very little to assist their football colleagues, especially with preparing a basic yet reasonable playing surface.

Dont think Boro 'pass' many sides off the pitch normally but it must have been murder playing (or watching) stuff on that field all season. I'd certainly had more than enough of it after just the first half.

London Welsh RU Club have had their appeal against being refused promotion to the Premiership upheld. They were initially kept in the Championship because they did not have primacy of tenure at the Kassam Stadium. The appeal panel ruled that the rule contravened EU and UK competition laws. Presumably this will have knock on effects on the FA's rules.
