Little Chefs Can't Post or Reply Privately

Inevitably by mentioning that I used to tick them years ago in the Coffee Thread below I have set the ball rolling.

Did anyone else tick them?

I got up to 148 by the time the chain got diluted by mergers and the like. I don't think they are that good now, often empty and usually overpriced. Though there are a few I still frequent, the one at Warminster seems pretty consistent.

They were very useful if in unfamiliar territory and wanting to eat at times when Pubs weren't doing food.

Any memories of good and bad ones? Also are there any left that look original, with lots of white wood like an American Diner and red and white awnings? There was one near Derby like that until recently.

Other Chains I can remember are Happy (Crappy) Eater, Kellys Kitchen, and wasn't there an "AJ" Diner Chain for a while too?

He he. I've been having a little dig around.
The Camberley one (a few people on Twitter say it was no.1) was on the A30 by Tank Road / Laundry Lane. There's a car wash there now.
Whilst looking for photos I've also found out about, allegedly, the smallest one in the country. It was in Bagshot, number 007 and seated about 10 people.

http://www.bagshotvillage.org.uk/memory/cafe.shtml

I just remember loads of them and Happy Eaters along the A1. My family are from Newcastle originally and my old man used to always use the A1 to get up there as he hated the M1. We'd often stop off at one or t'other on the way.

I can honestly say I have never been in a Little Chef in my life, also I have only ever been in a McDonalds once, and that was because I was in need of a toilet Blush
Have a feeling these two claims may not be enough to salvage my reputation on here though Laugh

I thought Little Chef had been bought out years ago?
Never knowingly been in one but I suppose being a

Been in one McDonald's...back in the late 70s and it was

On a picket line in the 80s, one bright spark offered to purchase us some coffees. They returned with a tray full from McDonalds - it was that vile I was almost tempted to go into work to wash my mouth out !

Nearest unticked Little Chef - the one near Kingston Bagpuize on the A420 Swindon-Oxford Road. I always pass it too late on the way home or too early on the way out somewhere.

In reply to a post on another thread (thread discipline is poor on here Wink )

All the Little Chefs in the main Cotswolds area have i think gone, although there may still be one at Evesham. Theres a big one still at Cirencester though.

Stow is a Majestic Wine Warehouse now.

To be honest its in part scandalous as thats a main trunk road and I have often been forced to go a different way home from the Midlands as since they all closed theres nowhere to take a break and get food. They were after all designated as Services, so now theres no Services on those roads....

There used to be a good chippy in Stow but last time I went there it had gone. I bet a lot of locals and tourists used those Cotswold ones. The Stow one was always packed.

Depends whats in , this morning ( only 2 o 3 a week mind ) it consisted of 2 eggs , 3 rashers of smoked bacon , 2 sausages and beans ( sausages and bacon grilled of course ) . No black pudding / mushrooms in .
3 rounds of toast and a cup of tea with and another to chill after !
No crissants or scramled eggs or eggs benedict for me .
Love kippers though but refrain as they stay with me for at least 2 days !

Still one at Burford, suppose Dave uses it he had a coffee with Geraldine Peers on BBC Oxford in Burford a year or so ago. Also one at Ciren and one at Stonehouse. Then going east it is Weston on the Green, north Alcester, south Chippenham, west Monmouth.

My dad insisted on stopping on the A303 on our regular summer holiday in Devon in the early 80s. Was allowed cherry pancakes with ice cream which was heaven for this pre-teen.

Monmouth is a regular stop for me, one of my semi regular passengers always likes to relieve himself at said Little Chef. Good place for papers, Welsh, Western Daily Press and Herefordshire ones.

Those paincakes, liked both of the previous two mentioned. Also liked the large toasted teacake with butter and a pot of coffee, nothing fancy (the coffee Cool) if I remember.

I believe the new American company owner said a few years ago, on taking over the Little Chef outlets :

"I want the Little Chefs to be a place you can take your girl-friend out for a romantic dinner."

Typical of the American understanding of British culture.
