Re: [derekn] Coffee [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I had an unfortunate experience in a Starbucks (or one of them anyway)
at either Stratford or Ebbsfleet International station a
few months ago.

Having been greeted by a bird with the most sardonic of grins,
I proceeded to ask for a small black coffee, with a just a touch
of hot milk, no sugar and in a china cup.

Simple enough request? I don't think so....

Ended up with nearly a pint of the stuff in a cardboard cup,
which was so hot that I feared a visit to the local burns unit
on first tasting...

Don't do tea outside Quixote towers as nobody, as of yet, can
make it to my taste - builders variety in a large cup.

Why would you pay good money for coffee out. You can buy a week's worth for less than they charge you for just one cup.

Because I don't carry a kettle around with me when I'm out.. Crazy

Re: [Part-Timer] Coffee [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

In Reply To
I wouldn't know what to do in a coffee shop. They'd probably laugh at me because I'd just want a cup of coffee, not a load of froth and a dash of cinnamon or whatever it is they sprinkle on top.

On my first visit to the Millenium Stadium I asked for a coffee at one of the outlets inside the ground and was immediately asked all manner of questions about what I wanted. Initially I just stood there with my mouth open, in a daze. Eventually I started answering them one by one, having to seek clarification about some of them. Finally I got frustrated and, to the amusement of a number of people around me, yelled 'I just want a cup of coffee' before apologising profusely for startling the poor girl who was serving me. I'm not sure who was more amazed; me for apparently finding myself in the middle of a Two Ronnies sketch, or the young girl serving me at being confronted with a thick Englishman who didn't know how to order a cup of coffee. Had I been at Costa I could have understood it but at a football ground......Crazy

Yep, all I want is a coffee. Just a coffee please and if you could put the milk and sugar handy that would be lovely. Football grounds are ok, but when out and about elsewhere with family I find myself repeating to myself "filter coffee, filter coffee" as I get nearer the front of the queue just so I''m saying something that they might be able to interpret correctly.

When that doesn't suffice and they want me to pick one from a long list of coffees, I'm traumatised at the thought that I could end up with a tiny cup of black super strength s**t. It did happen once and I'm not absolutely sure what it was called. Frown

It's called an 'espresso' - you can have two at once should you so desire....

Or ristretto - the same amount of coffee grains as an espresso, but half the liquid.

Or a double ristretto - the same amount of liquid as an espresso but double the coffee grains.

I ordered a flat white the other day and they served up an Americano with a small jug of cold milk on the side. Hmm.

Not sure how wide spread the aforementioned chains are in
countries like Spain, France and Italy but there are none
in the Spanish town I frequent.

Even the McDonald's shut down there a few years back although
for some strange reason, there is a Domino pizza gaff - had one
once when pissed...never again #shocking

I must be one of the few people never to have visited one of these establishments, the fact I'm not a coffee drinker might have something to do with it.

Many of them treat their staff appallingly, minimum wage, zero hours etc etc Unsure

Its incredible that people seem to love these places and will walk past the independent little coffee shops to sit in an expensive Costa. These chains have forced the cost of a cup of coffee through the roof and the public just seem to fall for the marketing. As Isaac sys they are often bad employers, Costa for example are anti-union, most use zero contracts etc.
Not to mention the lack of tax paid by these companies.

Surely under current minimum pay legislation that would be illegal.

As to the subject of coffee, I prefer expresso and generally seek out a family ( generally Italian ) run establishment to favour with my custom. When there is no mom and pop run outfit my pennies are spent on tea in a local cafe, which around my neck of the woods are generally owned and staffed by Greek/Turkish Cypriots.

At least I can claim the money back for this one from work.

I lived in France in the 90s and have not touched instant coffee since.

At home: filter coffee (currently on some imported Brazilian coffee from a cafe / shop in Reading); in the office likewise but one of those plunger jobs (3 mugs gets me through the 1st 1/2 of the morning; if I'm out, a double espresso. In all 3 cases, black with 2 sugars. Occasionally go to Costa for a quick muffin (if Don Quixote will pardon the expression...)

Re: [Oxford Stone] Coffee [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

There is a small independently owned coffee and snack bar just around the corner from my abode owned and run by two young Italians.

I go in there at least once a week; there are only seven stools against a narrow shelf against a wall so space is limited.

The Americano [black and unadulterated with sugar] is lovely, the food is great, and most of the bar is full of Italian items for sale, from wine, to pasta, to fabulous cakes and amaretto, to a snack bar with olives, artichokes, peppers and other fillings in various olive oils.

A large Americano with a generous slice of real Italian pizza [yes I know they invented it in New York] leaves change from 5.

The atmosphere is real Italian with an Italian radio station playing and most of the customers are also Italian.

One of my favourite places in the UK.

This is where I have to admit that despite my "just give me a coffee please" standard line, I had a similar mind broadening experience.

Back in 1975 I stayed a week in Paris and discovered why the French are so proud of it. I also found out that the coffee, bread and cheese we had back home was not very good. ie crap, utter crap. Unsure I suppose some of the instant stuff is a bit better now, or maybe I've come to like the rubbish I'm accustomed to. After all I am a Blade. Crazy

A nephew of mine is employed as a Barista by one of the bigger chains in Ireland and they are fully unionised. He was surprised at the lack of English staff in coffee shops over here.

Could it be that the English view the food service industries as a servile job rather than a career? Most pubs in the Republic are also totally unionised and their workforce could teach pub staff in the likes of Withering Spoons a thing or two.

It's tough to unionise a transient immigrant workforce, as is the case in this country. Really it comes down to Joe Public and what he/she is prepared to accept. In the case of the English that means price rather than quality.
