it's stood the test of time & is still an "every track's a good'un" album.

I've just had one of those moments. I listened to the first album by Garbage and suddenly remembered how good that is. It's amazing to think it was released 17 years ago. Doesn't feel that long.
Another album I forgot to mention earlier is The Specials' self-titled LP.

Garbage on tour early July inc Brixton Academy.

... in no particular order (couldn't always pick a particular one - and unable to stop at 10 - & sure I've missed few more) Blush:-

Hatfield & The North - Rotters Club - not a note out of place
Steve Hackett - Darktown
Brand X - Is There Anything About? (or Moroccan Roll)
The Church - Starfish - glad to see Splodge putting this one to the fore too! Cool
Peter Hammill - Over - not for the emotionally fragile
Al Stewart - Year of The Cat
Caravan - Land of Grey and Pink (or Better By Far)
Genesis - The Lamb ...
Andy Mackay - In Search of Eddie Riff
Eno - Another Green World (or Before and After Science or Here Come the Warm Jets)
John Martyn - One World
Kayak - Periscope Life
Horslips - Book of Invasions
Camel - Solitary Traveller (or Breathless - hardened Camel-ites won't thank me for that one! Angelic)

Some crackers on there! Argus, oh yes an absolute classic!

There is a new Levellers album out, they went totally off the boil for years but its getting good reviews....though the Levellers getting a good review in "Classic Rock" may be a two edged sword..

.

Whenever I discuss HMHB with people who used to listen to them they always want the first two albums taped. Most aren't aware of their latest ten albums. When I do a copy I always throw in a few of the newer numbers to give them a taste of things.

Tell me about it. One of my friends at work really only knows the first two albums. The last five or six albums are so great that the early stuff sounds a bit silly in comparison.

Respect for New Order's Technique (the Ibiza album). I'm more Bandwagonesque with Teenage Fanclub.

Like Bandwagonesque also especially the opener 'The Concept'. With New Order it's Power,Corruption & Lies all the way through to Technique and the first Electronic LP for me, then it all went a bit too ordinary.
I forgot to mention The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead by far my favourite album of theirs. Wedding Present also for me but George Best, Tommy & Seamonsters.

Love Technique so much. In fact I've been listening to it this week and it still sounds so modern now.

Built to Spill - There Is No Enemy

Great album, been listening to some OMD over the weekend. Pretty much downhill for them after Architecture and Morality, but I do still like some of their later stuff.

Is everyone on this thread in their 40s, I have to wonder, or are there some youngsters who are listening to what their dads and uncles liked?

The Queen Is Dead and Power, Corruption And Lies in the car today. Not a subversive jubilee celebration, just fancied an 80s day.

I prefer Architecture and Morality, Ted and Alice by Half Man Half Biscuit. Tongue

The wonderful dexterity of Hannu Mikkula
Makes me want to shake hand with the whole of Finland
But the horrible sincerity of Miriam Stoppard
Makes me wanna go out and commit mass murder

I ranked Jane Scott for a genuine friend
She was otherwise engaged so i looked round the bend
I saw the wheels of nihilism rolling my way
Now i live life in the bus lane
Yeah i live life in the bus lane

The halcyonic dynamo that lit up my childhood
Made me feel secure on the roads in winter
But the nauseating bashfulness of early Diana
Makes me want to set fire to commemorative tea towels

I walked across the road with a peach in my hand
A hammer in my head and i couldn't understand
Behind us stood a maniac laughing at me
Saying "I like to watch the adverts
Yeah i saw it in the adverts"

Aaaah!

You fold your grandma's neck
And smother her with custard
As a contribution to your folio
And the very next morning
You take her into college
And the tutor with the beard and the polio
Says "Well it has got potential
And it could well be essential
But it should be more dramatic if you know what i mean"

Have you tuned in
To Radio da da
Every friday evening
At six in the morning
Scan the airwaves
For Radio da da
It goes something like this.

You know what you made me go and do? Back in the DHSS / The Trumpton Riots EP CD just arrived on my desk. Not listened to the cassette, thought it's still on a shelf, for 10 years or more. I'll listen to the CD on the way to Cardiff tomorrow.

Some great choices in there, here's my current thoughts, though stopping at 10 is very hard indeed:

PIL - PIL (1st Edition)
Joni Mitchell - The Hissing of Summer Lawns
The Go! Team - Rolling Blackouts - The first two albums were good, but this topped em both. EPIC.
Everything Everything - Man Alive - an astounding debut album which I doubt they'll ever top.
Broadcast - The Noise Made by People
Sterolab - Oscillons from the Anti-Sun
Zero 7 - When it Falls
Charlotte Hatherley - The Deep Blue
Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen
Gene - Olympian

I've omitted a good number already mentioned as I'd also have The Smiths, Billy Bragg, HMHB, Blur, REM (early stuff), Shed 7, Gang of Four, Steely Dan, Garbage, Buzzcocks, Magazine and a good number of others in there, plus some classical shit as well from such as William Walton, Rachmaninov, Debussy, Sibelius & Philip Glass.

I've not heard that album but I'm delighted that I'll be seeing her new project, Sylver Tongue, as support to Bat For Lashes this autumn.
There's a Sylver Tongue album being recorded now. I've only heard two tracks from it so far but it sounds like it'll be good.

Wasn't aware of Sylver Tongue, but from what I've just listened to on youtube it's Heaven 17 meets Dubstar and Little Boots and whilst I like all 3 individually, I'm not convinced it totally works.

Her 3 solo albums are wonderful though, there's a real progression through the 3 as she matures and develops as a songwriter. All of them have "tingle" moments: Title track Grey Will Fade on the first, Wounded Sky and Siberia on Deep Blue and Alexander on New Worlds.

I remember reading a quote somewhere that Alexander was the finest song Andy Partridge never wrote, high praise indeed.

Just to prove I don't only listen to modern jazz and because I'm a compulsive lister, here's a bag of my favourite goodies :-

Gillian Welch - Revival
Nanci Griffith - Late Night Grand Hotel
Joni Mitchell - Hejira
Judy Collins - Who Knows Where the Time Goes?
Sandy Denny - Rendezvous
Bjork - Vespertine

Tim Buckley - Goodbye & Hello
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
David Bowie - Hunky Dory
Jackson Browne - I'm Alive

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes
Television - Marquee Moon
Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy
Poco - Poco
Band - Music from Big Pink
Mercury Rev - See You On the Other Side

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
Punch Brothers - Who's Feeling Young Now?
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Eels - Beautiful Freak
Horrors - Primary Colours
John Grant - Queen of Denmark
Killers - Hot Fuss
Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther
Other Lives - Tamer Animals

No particular order here, but looking at the number of plays they've received on my iTunes Library, the top five would be these :-

Bjork - Vespertine
Other Lives - Tamer Animals
Poco - Poco
Gillian Welch - Revival
John Grant - Queen of Denmark
