German summer sports? Can't Post or Reply Privately

Hi guys,

I am in Germany for the last week of June and, due to extenuating circumstances, have a lot of time to kill. I'm guessing there will be no football or ice-hockey so can anyone recommend any summer sports?

I'll be in the Frankfurt area.

Thanks

Not as good as DA's recommendation but there is the ultimate oxymoron of a sport name throughout Germany and Austria during the summer of Ice Stocksport. We saw it in Mureck, Styria, South Austria whilst going to speedway in the stadium next door a few years ago. During the winter it is naturally played on ice and is a form of curling but the stones have a long central shaft so players are mainly upright (I'm leading with my chin with that comment; awaits innuendo ridden reply) rather than low on the ice as in curling, when delivering the stone.

There is no ice used in the summer although many do still refer to it with the Ice heading. The "stones" have bearings under them instead to allow them to run. From memory I think it was an asphalt surface in Mureck but as it would be iced over for the winter I may be wrong and it could have been the surface of the icing unit and metal.

Try this link for fixtures in the Frankfurt area during your stay (and to prove I am not making this sport up or have lost my marbles)
http://www.esc-glashuette.de/3.html Although it is linked to the site of one club the area fixtures are shown as they seem to be tournament based rather than one club against another.

Had you been staying into July I would have recommeded Diedenbergen speedway in Frankfurt on the 7th. Also, although I have no fixtures or evidences, many towns have a 1000 metre tracks and hold annual one off long track speedway matches during things such as town fetes which would be advertised locally.

Thanks for the info. From the look of things I will miss out as there are fixtures on the 2 Saturdays I'm there, the first being when I arrive, the second being the day of the event I'm visiting for!

Still, worth knowing about. I am there until the 2 July but will have moved on to Bonn and then Aachen by then, before flying back from Duesseldorf.
