Wish I had my Subbuteo still. Used to love the school holidays when a group of us would spend most of our time playing tournaments. Sadly I sold my set at a car boot sale in 1990.Frown

Still play with my son (and get all competitive Dad if he dares to take the lead!). He plays with his West Brom team from last season, I use the red team that came with the set and pretend I'm Tamworth.

I may still have some stuff in my mums loft - but she probably sold it along with my dinky and matchbox toys, airfix stuff and plastic soldiers - (marines, French circa Sharpe period, Japanese and 1st and second ww Tommies and Germans)
I played in a league and luckily had a few sets of teams - because my Argentina team suffered several career ending injuries during the Falklands War.
I also had Derby - obviously, Falkirk - they played in black when refs still did - not sure how, England admiral kit vintage. Terracing and spectators - also had cricket and rugby, sounds like I was spoilt but all bought for through child labour (mine that is)

Is that within the rules of the Geneva Convention? Tongue

I used to make model aeroplanes too so I had loads of those little paints. However, tipex dried much more quickly so I used to white wash teams when I wanted to repaint them. This had the side effect of making them look like they were wearing thick jumpers after a couple of changes. Very Satisfying picking of all the 'fat' with the point of a compass though - a bit like picking that wood glue off they used at school off your hands...

Worth checking - looking around the internet, if you've got the right teams, boxed and in good condition, they can make £75 or more.

Took great pains to ensure that Trevor Hockey had his beard and Tony Currie his long flowing locks and shirt outside shorts.

I remember my Dad getting me Subbuteo one birthday - I still can't figure out why the two teams he got me were Dundee and Monaco. My brother and I bought the little number stickers to out on their backs and got the latest team sheets from match magazine. Paul Ince for West Ham, who was unheard of then, was always getting sent off and 'Ince' entered our vocabulary to mean dirty. Great days.

Re: [Oxford Stone] subbuteo [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Used to play with my brother. We used a kitchen timer to determine the length of each match and I would put it as 2 x 15 mins but my brother always set it as 2 x 10 mins until one day I wondered why time went by so fast and had to tell him it was supposed to be 15 mins!

There was also a 4-page Subbuteo newspaper, which at a reasonable A3 size was like a continental football programme. It was quite interesting reading and about 2-3 years ago, I recently bought three copies by advertising on a Subbuteo forum. These were the same editions as the ones we had in Oxford but unfortunately they had punch holes in them, so if anyone has better copies which they would like to sell, please PM me.

Some of the catalogues were things of beauty - This Is Subbuteo 1975/6 folded out as an A2 poster and it was a photo of each kit. That and some earlier ones might also be in the loft, will get round to checking one day. Just putting subbuteo into google images has wasted 10 minutes of my day without scratching the surface.

Still in a grumpy mood eh Mr Hod? I was just trying to make the story a bit more interesting.

Oh and by the way I'm still trying to work out what the initials 'DA' in your username stand for, and I hope no-one thinks you are a Dutch-speaking fan of Manchester United!

Have a huge box of Subbuteo. last used for a tournament at University in the 80s. Several teams hand repainted to Scottish colours. Some others mint boxed. Prize posession 1978 Darlington/Clyde/Liverpool II.

One of the posts above implies its still produced ? Is this the case?

Oh dear, it is...nice and cheap to collect the new ones too...

There's a large box full of my Subbuteo stuff in my dad's attic. Star of the heap is a Portsmouth/Yugoslavia team (is my memory so good I can still remember it as code number 149?) with a no.10 striker handpainted with an Alan Biley blonde hairdo.
