I was deeply saddened to hear of Chris Thompson's passing at the age of 52. A very talented player, I remember him in the Bolton Wanderers side of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Born in Walsall, he was a former England Youth player and joined Wanderers straight from school, making his debut in a League Cup tie against Peterborough Utd in Oct77. He played in Wanderers' last season in the old Division One in 1979-80 becoming a regular in midfield in the 1981-82 season when he scored 12 goals. He later moved on to Blackburn Rovers and was their top scorer in 1984-85 with 15 goals as they just missed out on promotion to Division One. He later played for Wigan Athletic, Blackpool, Cardiff City and then made a handful of league appearances for Walsall before joining Fleetwood. At Wanderers he had the misfortune to be in a struggling team but he had great ability and a good goalscoring record; towards the end of the 1981-82 with the club fighting relegation from D2 I remember him scoring two goals in a 2-0 win at Blackburn and then another two in a dramatic 3-2 home win over Derby County, Wanderers eventually staving off relegation with a last day home win over Sheffield Wednesday. The Blackburn Citizen has a good obituary here: http://www.blackburncitizen.co.uk/...star_Chris_Thompson/ And Bolton News here with tributes from Peter Reid and John Thomas: http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/...erer_Chris_Thompson/
