End of the classic Grünwalder Stadion Can't Post or Reply Privately

Another classic ground is disappearing. The famous old stadium has been closed for renovation. Next season the second teams of 1860 & Bayern will play in Ismaning and Heimstetten respectively.

The 'new' 12500 capacity Grünwalder 'suitable for 3.liga' will open for the 2013/4 season.

Indeed the end of an era.

I was lucky enough to visit twice and have seen the ground in two very different lights. In 1992 I was here for a German Cup game between TSV 1860 and Dynamo Dresden. TSV were in the Bayern Oberliga at the time and playing all first team games at Grünwalder Strasse. It was still not that long since reunification, and nobody seemed quite sure if Dresden would have any fans at the game. In fact, they brought around 5,000 in a 17,500 attendance and contributed to a fantastic atmosphere, as the away team won 2-1 in glorious sunny weather. The second time was in 2003 for a much more mundane TSV 1860 Amateurs game against Ismaning (soon to be their hosts), also in the Oberliga Bayern and a 3-0 home win in front of just 250 or so. My main memory was of how flipping cold it was that particular evening.

Last Match: Ide Hill v AFC Mottingham
Last New Ground: King George Playing Fields, Westerham, kent (Ground No. 1,064)
Planned vists to new grounds: AFC Wallingford
0-0s 12/13: 2 (21 games since) - Av. goals 12/13: 3.54 - Av. crowd 12/13: 4,223

Season 90/91 for me Stephen.
A long Easter weekend in the Eastern block began on Thursday March 28 at TSV Eching at 17-00 , this was followed by a visit to TSV Munich for their game at Grunwalder against Weiden at 20-00.
Started snowing at Eching and by the 20-00 kick off there was 4-5 inches at the Grunwalder. But lines were brushed and it was played on a layer of snow.
Both games were in the Oberliga Bayern but quite a difference in attendances , 300 at Eching to see their 6-0 win v Helmbrechts and then 28,000 for TSV's 2-0 win.
This wil help to explain crowd, although a very well supported team at times , this was a top of the table crunch=
Final League Table.
1. TSV 1860 München 32 22 10 0 62:21 41 54.
2. SpVgg Unterhaching (A) 32 20 7 5 76:33 43 47.
3. SpVgg Weiden 2010 32 18 7 7 63:38 25 43.

Prog cover for Weiden game=

I have only been to the Grunwalder once, this season to see 1860 Munchen II (0) v Waldhof Mannheim (2) on Monday 23/04/2012 in Regionalliga Sud, Attendance 450. Lovely stadium, had character and would love to have seen a decent crowd there. More Police than away supporters, as I was told that Waldhof Mannheim have a bad reputation, bar open but no alcohol served, friendly people though. Good programme & teamsheet as well. This was after seeing 1860 Munchen (4) v Ingolstadt (1) on Saturday 21/04/2012 at Allianz Stadium, Attendance 21,100.

Lovely old ground. Went by myself on a Friday night to watch 1860 Ressies ?? years ago. My travelling companions went elsewhere, Michelle had been there, and Veteran wouldn't watch reserves. Certainly highlight of the weekend for me, got a 0-0 at the olympic Stadion the following day, but did see Jurgen K get in a strop.

1-May-2005: 1860 0-0 Rot Weiss Essen (2. Bundesliga). Att. 18,400
A day trip from Shipton-under-Wychwood - a long way to go for a 0-0 draw and a couple of beers!

Also Bayern Munich played over 40 years in this stadium. Since 20 year it will be used
by the Reserve of Bayern Munich. They reached the quarter finals in the german cup
about to times.

The Grünwalder Stadium will be finishes for the season 2013/2014.

I actually saw 1860's last first team home game at the stadium, I think it was in 1995 or thereabouts, I had to buy a ticket from a tout outside the ground as the game had sold out well in advance.

Chris - if you did not notice, I went for a first team match in 2005.
I think it was the penultimate, rather than final first team game at the stadium

What a shame. Wonderful ground with more character and interest than 50 of your new concrete and plastic monstrosities.

As Youngster correctly states I do not watch reserves so I was very fortunate to be able to get there on 06.12.04 for Munich 1860 2 Greuther Furth 1 in Bundesliga 2, 04-05 being the season when they returned for just a few home games.

If I was organised, I'd be Dangerous.

As people seem to saying when they visited, I will add mine - 15 Sep 1991 TSV 3 Homburg 0, Bundesliga 2. This season marked TSV's brief return to the national leagues after being kicked out in 1982.

I can confirm 1860's last ever League Game at the Grunwalder was on the 22/05/2005 against Ahlen, I attended as a Guest of the Munich Re (-Insurance Company). A couple of Days later a page from a German Daily Newspaper arrived showing a picture of the "Final" Scoreboard confirming a 3 - 4 Away victory which included a picture of myself, you wouldn't normally have noticed, but for knowing where I was Standing. We could have had Seats, but our Hosts wanted us to experience the Atmosphere.

3.10.04 1860 2 Wacker Burghausen 4 in front of a full house of
around 22,000- a superb day.

We'd been to see St Pauli v Fortuna on the Saturday and got the
night train from Altona to Munich and had tickets for the away end.

Stunning place,my abiding memory
was that most of the 4,000 Burghausen fans seemed to be very young,
making us feel more like old gits than normal.

I think this is where I saw Bayern Amateurs beat Hoffenheim (who went on to better things) 6-2 in 2004 in what was effectively Div 3 South, having seen Bayern lose 1-3 to Werder Bremen (who won the league) in the Olympic stadium the day before.
