What is this record? Can't Post or Reply Privately

Answer on Sunday 3rd June if no-one gets it first.

This record was set by Preston, and they are also the current holders. It has been held by six clubs and beaten eighteen times, including eight times by Preston. They beat their own record four times in consecutive seasons.

Is it something like the most play off appearances without being promoted?

'fraid not. Preston do hold the record for most unsuccessful play-off appearances, but they haven't appeared in four consecutive sesons.

As promised: the record is the lowest position by a former title winning club.

1890-91 Preston 2nd Div 1
1891-92 Everton 5th Div 1
1893-94 Preston 14th Div 1
1899-1900 Preston 16th Div 1
1900-01 Preston 17th Div 1
1901-02 Preston 3rd Div 2
1902-03 Preston 7th Div 2
1923-24 Manchester Utd 14th Div 2
1929-30 Preston 16th Div 2
1933-34 Manchester Utd 20th Div 2
1969-70 Preston 22nd Div 2
1970-71 Aston Villa 4th Div 3
1971-72 Blackburn 10th Div 3
1973-74 Blackburn 14th Div 3
1974-75 Huddersfield 24th Div 3
1975-76 Huddersfield 5th Div 4
1976-77 Huddersfield 9th Div 4
1977-78 Huddersfield 11th Div 4
1985-86 Preston 23rd Div 4

When I prepared the table using Word it was nicely aligned, but the detail can be seen.

Interesting chart, other than Huddersfield & Preston I think only four other former champions have graced the fourth tier - Wolves, Portsmouth, Burnley and Sheffield United. None of them can break the record just yet but Portsmouth must be the favourites to do so if their financial problems are not sorted soon.
